Hot stone isn’t just “warm and relaxing” — there’s real physiology behind why it kills pain.
What physically happens when hot stones touch the body:
1. Heat → Blood vessels dilate
Basalt stones are used because they hold heat at 50-60°C. When placed on skin, heat transfers 3-4mm deep into muscle.
Result: Blood vessels widen → blood flow increases in that area. More blood = more oxygen + nutrients delivered, and waste products like lactic acid get flushed out faster.
2. Muscles literally melt
Heat directly reduces muscle spindle activity — that’s the “tight knot” signal in your brain. The warmth makes muscle fibres lengthen and fascia soften. That’s why your therapist can work deeper after stones without bruising the client.
3. Pain gate control kicks in
Your nervous system can only process so many signals. The heat receptors flood the brain with “warm” signals, which blocks some “pain” signals from reaching your brain. Same theory as rubbing your elbow after you bump it.
4. Nervous system switches modes. Hot stones trigger the parasympathetic nervous system — your “rest + digest” mode. Cortisol drops, serotonin + endorphins rise. Less stress chemicals = less perceived pain. This is why clients feel d***y after.
