Loosing your mucus plug (aka 'bloody show'), is definitely an exciting sign that your body is getting ready for labour, but not necessarily that you are in labour or that labour is imminent (unless you are having surges at the same time!)
So what is it?
π± The mucus plug is a thick piece of mucus (a bit like phlegm, sorry not sorry!) that sits in the opening of your cervix during pregnancy. It's role it to prevent bacteria and infection from getting into your uterus and reaching your baby.
π±As the cervix begins to 'ripen' (medical jargon for 'get ready for labour') the cervix gets softer and a bit wider, and the mucus plug falls out.
π± It can be clear, off-white or slightly bloody (red, brown or pink) in colour. and stringy, sticky and jelly-like in texture! Nice huh?!
π± So how long until labour starts after it comes out? It varies. Some people go into labor within hours or days, while others may not go into labor for a few weeks.
Have you got an funny or interesting story about your mucus plug?!! Share below! I'll start....
π I wore a pad in late pregnancy incase my waters broke. When my mucus plug came out I was so excited that I put my pad with the plug, in a clean take away tub, put a transparent lid on and took it to show my midwife! π
