Here are some ways to take care of your mental health:

💜 Talk to someone you trust
💛 Do some physical activity, like going for a walk
🧡 Do things you enjoy
💚 Give yourself time to rest
❤ Know that having a bad day does not make you a bad person!

Looking in on a meltdown it is easy to assume that whatever event just occurred was the singular reason it happened. And therefore, as an observer, it would be easy to assume that righting that one event would solve the whole problem.

This is where we need to see where we are usually wrong. Yes, a single incident can sometimes be the whole cause, but more often than not there are more events, incidents, and feelings behind it. That one event? That was just the final straw.

Understanding this can also help us become aware of how the external presentation of some meltdowns (eg anger and lashing out) are masking other emotions (eg fear and anxiety), because they are hidden in the totality of the meltdown.

Just like Jenga blocks. Sometimes it's many things that cause the 'fall'. Sometimes it only takes a couple. And while they may appear much smaller in isolation, together they can cause a total collapse. So look back on what took someone to that place because it's there that you'll find where the support is needed in the future.

Quote of the Day

I adapted this quote, which should have said ‘happy day in school’.

The child can appear happy in school but it is highly likely they are masking (sometimes extremely proficiently) triggers during the school day. I will reshare our masking prompt today - use this to try to identify your child’s triggers.

Do not be surprised with some children school report they do not see the issues - some children are very proficient at masking and it is only when observing that child closely that you can notice the telltale signs of anxiety. Some children even with close observation it is still not evident.

When supporting a child demonstrating after school restraint collapse identifying the triggers is paramount - so that we may then put strategies in place to manage or eliminate those triggers.
