😴 Why Do You Have “Sleep” in Your Eyes When You Wake Up?
That little crusty or sticky stuff in the corner of your eyes in the morning is called eye discharge, often nicknamed “sleep”. It’s completely normal — and here’s why it happens:
👁️ What Causes It?
While you sleep:
▶️Your eyes still produce tears, mucus, and natural oils.
▶️Blinking stops, so these substances can’t spread out or drain like they do during the day.
▶️Instead, the mixture collects in the corners of your eyes, dries a little, and becomes what we call “sleep”.
🧬 Why Do Some People Have More Than Others?
Several factors affect how much discharge you wake up with:
▶️Dry eyes – the body makes more mucus to protect the surface.
▶️Allergies – increase tear film debris and irritation.
▶️Blocked tear ducts – cause tears and mucus to pool.
Contact lenses – can irritate the eyes overnight if overworn.
Eye infections (like conjunctivitis) – lead to thicker, yellow or green discharge.
Blepharitis – inflammation of the eyelids causes extra crusting.
🚨 When Is It NOT Normal?
Seek professional care if the discharge is:
▶️Thick, yellow, or green
▶️Accompanied by redness, swelling, light sensitivity, or pain
▶️Constant throughout the day
