Democratic Alliance Hope you guys see this. We run an NPO for special needs kids, have been running since 2007. We have helped hundreds of special needs children over the years.
But we could never have done so without the invaluable help of volunteers. We'd love to be in a financial position to hire someone full-time to help us, but quite simply we don't have that kind of money.
Last year, we had a student from Germany come out to work with us, as part of her studies in Rehabilitation Science. She was so impressed with the work we do here, that she decided to volunteer again to work with us this year.
And that's where it went pear-shaped. We submitted all necessary documentation, and she got turned down.
Why?
Well, according to the SA Embassy in Munich, they refused her Visa because she "would be taking a job that should go to a South African"
Clearly the embassy staff don't understand what the term 'volunteer' means.
So I wrote back to the embassy and explained that this job description DOES NOT EXIST because we can't afford to hire a local, and that she's only going to be here for a period of a few months, not forever. She's a VOLUNTEER.
AS in, she cannot take a job that doesn't exist to give to a South African.
She just got feedback from the embassy.
Oh no, we can't take this decision. Your appeal has to be sent back to Home Affairs in South Africa for them to take a decision.
And it will take 4 to 6 months.
The mind boggles, really. The sad truth is that South Africa doesn't have a huge volunteer mindset. We regularly advertise for help and we've yet to find someone (except for you, Cheryl!) who stays longer than a few weeks.
So, if there are people overseas who want to come and help out at an NPO for special needs kids, why are they being treated like this??
If any of you have political contacts, please spread?
