If you have a dish of water in your garden for bees, make sure it includes something they can stand on.

Without a landing surface, the dish can become a hazard. Bees need water, but they are not adapted to swim. On smooth or deep water with no foothold, they quickly lose energy, struggle to stay afloat, and may drown.

How to make a safe bee water source in five minutes:

Use any shallow container — a clay saucer, a plant tray, or a ceramic bowl. Add stones, pebbles, or pieces of tile so that they rise above the water surface and create stable landing spots. You can also include natural materials like moss, twigs, or cork, which retain moisture and provide grip.

The exact depth of the water is less important than having safe access points, but keeping it shallow (around 1–2 cm) further reduces risk.

Refresh the water every 2–3 days, or more often in warm weather, to keep it clean and to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.

Place the container near flowering plants, ideally in a spot that gets partial shade during the hottest part of the day. Bees will locate and return to reliable water sources on their own.

A simple dish becomes a safe water source with just a few added materials — it takes only minutes and costs almost nothing.

We are passionate about promoting and making use of South Africa's rich variety of resources and are active participants in the momentum towards creating an empowered and self-sustaining nation. It gives us much pride and joy to include previously disadvantaged woman in the production of our products and promote them as the business grows form strength to strength.
