So renovations on the new venue began a short 5 weeks ago and we re-opened Vitali on Tuesday.

It's amazing what we have achieved in such a short time..
All thanks to a great team of reliable and enthusiastic supporters and contractors.

A big thank you to all who had a hand in making it all happen so fast and so beautifully.

So relieved and grateful to be at this stage of the process!

Such a stunning spot 😍

Magnesium’s role in the immune function is less known to the general public. We typically think of magnesium in terms of better nerve function, sleep and helping reduce cramps and possibly to ease mild blood pressure. However, Magnesium is an important regulator of various functions of the immune system, as a co-factor in making Immunoglobulins, reducing certain cytokine activity, activating T-helper cells, and improving the “binding” of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes to foreign virus and bacteria.

Vitamin D has gained a huge amount of interest in the last decade around the world. In is unlikely that most folk have not read somewhere of its importance. I have been measuring people’s vitamin D levels for the last 12 years and can categorically state that vitamin levels are low on the southern tip of this country. We all know that vitamin D comes from the sun. At 34 degrees South, on the Garden Route, the sun hits us at a very acute angle for more than half the year, during which time it’s hard to get enough sunlight to produce the vitamin D in our bodies. Furthermore, given the concerns around sun exposure and skin cancer, most folk avoid midday sun, wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and thus we get less vitamin than we think. To give you an idea, normal vitamin D levels in a blood sample should be between 30 and 100, the typical levels I see are around the early 20’s.

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, and, through its own mechanisms of action, is a powerful modulator of inflammation and immune responses. Dietary selenium intake varies throughout the world, depending on soil selenium levels, as well as the types of mono-culture farms that are in the area. Some research suggest that Selenium is deficient in 15% of the global population. In South Africa, selenium soil levels are lowest in the southern parts of the country, and higher in the northern and north-east areas. Selenium gained a lot of interest when it was noted that people with HIV were less likely to develop full blown AIDS if they had higher intake of Selenium.

Zinc has an abundance of evidence that has accumulated over more than 50 years of research, clearly showing its benefits as an “antiviral” as well as boosting the aspects of the immune function that handles virus infection or interaction. Zinc deficiency is estimated at 25% of the population in developing countries due to malnutrition, as well as a high percentage of the people in developed countries due to lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, over consumption of refined flours and sugars, to the over-use of antibiotics and various other commonly prescribed chronic medicines.

In terms of viral infections, Vitamin C has long been used as a immune booster, the specific biochemical pathways this happens are extremely varied, from the increased production of adrenal hormones, to its antioxidant benefits, reduce inflammation, improved detoxification in the liver and its known anti-infective properties, in both viral and bacterial infections.
