A vast gathering of mothers forms a line to access basic medical care in Mir Bazaar Clinic.

Mahtaab, a community mobiliser and vaccinator, educates mothers on the need for early childhood healthcare.

"On a daily basis, I educate roughly 300 women, and I am pleased to serve the people who come to the Mir Bazaar clinic," she says.

Margrat Patrick, 20, arrived at Mtimabii Health Clinic in rural Malawi with her mother, Ethel, in the pitch black the day before she was due to give birth to her first child. Margrat’s mother came prepared - torch in hand.

“We have to bring the torch because it helps in the absence of light. Without the torch nurses would have been stranded with the darkness,” said Ethel.

A day later, as the clinic was preparing to receive solar light for the first time, Margrat gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Diana.

Margrat is the last woman to give birth in the dark at Mtimbaii.

“I am happy. The baby was born in the dark but she has come with light,” she said.

Luckily, Baby Diana was born without complications, but mothers aren’t always so lucky. Complications during childbirth due to lack of light are common.

“Things should be working this way. We will be free. Women here will now have an easier time with motherhood. When the clinic is in a blackout, our hearts are full of worry. But now that we see this light, we have joy in our hearts,” Ethel exclaimed.

Congratulations to the Unjani Clinics NPC team on the opening of their 111th clinic!

This clinic, situated in Kibler Park, Gauteng, is part of the Unjani Clinics Network – a flagship enterprise development project for Imperial that empowers black women professional nurses to operate and ultimately own primary healthcare container clinics in their communities. These clinics primarily serve the employed but uninsured market, in mostly low-income and rural communities.

The network is funded through the enterprise development spend from several partners, including 31 clinics that are funded by Imperial.
