Today, on World Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day (February 14th), the Zambia Paediatric Association joins the global community in raising awareness about congenital heart defects (CHDs) — the most common birth defects affecting children’s hearts.

These conditions require early detection, specialized care, and timely intervention to give our little ones the chance to thrive.

We are proud to highlight the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka, which has been instrumental in advancing pediatric cardiac care in Zambia. Through dedicated teams, partnerships, and life-saving surgeries, the hospital is transforming outcomes for children born with CHDs.

Remarkably, since last year, more than 15 Zambian children have successfully undergone heart repairs at the National Heart Hospital — a testament to growing local expertise and hope for many more families!

Let’s continue advocating for better access to screening, treatment, and support. Together, we can ensure every child with a heart defect gets the care they deserve.

The Zambia Paediatric Association applauds Save A Child's Heart for the commendable work.

Dr Muulu, the National Heart Hospital and all Zambian children are waiting for you. Wishing you all the best in your training.

Eulogy for Professor Mukelabai – A Life in Service

Professor Mukelabai’s journey was one of unwavering dedication, compassion, and humility. His life story is best told through the impact he had in each chapter of his career and the legacy he leaves behind.

Early Career and Training

From his formative years in medicine, Professor Mukelabai displayed a passion for paediatrics that would define his life. His time in Toronto enriched his knowledge and skills, experiences which he generously shared with colleagues and students upon his return. He quickly became known not only for his clinical expertise but for his genuine commitment to nurturing the next generation of doctors.

Mentorship and Teaching

As a consultant in the early 1980s, he guided interns and postgraduate students with patience and care. Many recall his skill in life-saving procedures, such as femoral vein cannulation, and his insistence that paediatrics demanded both technical excellence and heartfelt compassion for patients. He organised regular tutorials, bedside teaching sessions, and personal pep talks, urging his students to read and challenge themselves. His calm, deliberate walk and deep voice became reassuring presences in the wards, and his subtle humour made even the most stressful days bearable.

A Career of Dedication

Over the decades, Professor Mukelabai became a pillar of the paediatric community. He never truly retired, continuing to attend tutorials, student assessments, and ward rounds. He was a familiar and comforting figure in the hospital car park, in the lecture halls, and at the bedside, always ready to share wisdom and encouragement. His dedication to teaching and patient care was unmatched, and he inspired countless medical professionals to pursue the same path of service.

Legacy and Farewell

Professor Mukelabai’s life was a testament to selfless service. His legacy lives on in the generations of doctors he mentored, the patients he cared for, and the colleagues who were privileged to work alongside him. To his children, grandchildren, and extended family, we offer our deepest condolences. Know that he carried the same love and devotion into his home that he shared with his professional family.

He ran his race with dignity and grace, leaving behind a light that will continue to guide us. Farewell, dear Professor Mukelabai. May your soul rest in eternal peace.

What an incredible day for the Zambia Paediatric Association (ZPA) and the Lusaka Fitness Squad!

Our President, Dr Donald Bwalya Mumba, who is also a proud member of the Lusaka Fitness Club, completed an amazing 56km marathon to raise awareness about supporting the children at the National Heart Hospital.

The goal? To bring smiles to these brave little ones through toys and reading books
We also want to give a huge shoutout to:
• Our former Treasurer, Dr. Cheelo Mwiinga, who ran an impressive 31 km in the same spirit!
• The amazing Team Kalulushi, who joined the cause and ran 10km to show their support for the children!
The National Heart Hospital was beautifully represented by Medical Director Dr. Agnes Mtaja, a dedicated ZPA member who joined us in this noble cause.

A massive THANK YOU to:
• Dr. Donald Bwalya Mumba for running the full 56km
• Dr. Cheelo Mwiinga for her 31 km effort

Meet Dr Donald Bwalya Mumba

Donald is running a *56K ultramarathon from Lusaka to Kafue*, pushing his physical limits, to support children born with congenital heart disease who need life-saving heart interventions to survive. Every step he runs is for the little hearts receiving care at the National Heart Hospital.

All donations raised through this initiative will go directly toward supporting children who need heart interventions at the hospital. Beyond financial support, Donald also encourages the community to donate toys and books, which can be dropped off at the UTH Children’s Hospital or the National Heart Hospital to bring comfort and joy.

Donald’s run is a reminder that when one person chooses to act, many lives can be touched. 💙
