Did you know? Hearing loss is affecting millions of school-age children worldwide—and many children in Zambia are equally affected!

According to the World Report on Hearing (2021) and the Global Burden of Disease Study (2021), around 90 million children and adolescents aged 5–19 years live with hearing loss. In many low-resource settings like Zambia, it often goes undiagnosed and untreated.
Common causes—such as otitis media with effusion (OME), chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), and impacted earwax—are preventable and treatable, yet they remain widespread in children. Hearing loss can start subtly and worsen over time if not addressed.

When left unaddressed, it doesn't just affect hearing—it impacts:

1. Speech and language development
2. Cognitive growth
3. Social skills
4. School performance
5. Future employment opportunities
6. Long-term economic well-being

As the Zambia Paediatric Association (ZPA), we are committed to child health and well-being.
Early detection and intervention can change lives!

Parents, teachers, and caregivers:

Watch for signs such as difficulty following conversations, turning up the volume, or delayed speech.

Visit your nearest health facility for ear examination and screening during routine clinic visits.

Let's break the silence on hearing loss—together we can ensure every Zambian child has the chance to hear, learn, and thrive! 💙 👂
