PREDISPOSING FACTORS TO PREMATURITY

• *Preeclampsia*
The development of high blood pressure and presence of preoteins after 20 weeks of gestation often leads to preterm labour
• *Diabetes M*
During this condition the baby grows too big for dates and this causes the uterus to distended to an extent it can no longer distend leading to premature triggering of uterine contractions.
• *Poor nutrition*
Now, poor nutrition right before or during pregnancy leads to poor placenta function and this causes preterm labour
• *Cervical incompetence*
This a condition where the cervix is weak and can't hold the foetus any more and therefore it leads to preterm labour.
• *Previous preterm labour*
A history of preterm labour increase the chances of having another.
• *Low social economic status*
This will lead to poor nutrition and eventually poor placental function

*THE FIVE WAYS TO PREVENT PREMATURITY*

1. *proper treatment of underlying conditions*
Thourough treatment of conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, kidney disease, etc in pregnancy will prevent preterm births

2. *Management of preeclampsia*
- Effective management of preeclampsia will prevent preterm delivery from occuring

3. * Discouraging teenage pregnancy and provision of family planning services to teenagers younger than 18 years leads to reduction of preterm births.
4. *Good nutrition*
* good nutrition promotes good placenta perfusion and therefore it helps to prevent prematurity
5. *Treatment of cervical incompetence*
* Cervical seclage is a procedure where the cervix is sutured with shrodkar suture. This prevents premature labour.
6. *Avoid to***co smoking while pregnant*
* To***co is associated with preterm delivery because of a substance it contains(nicotin) which usually causes oxytocin response that leads to triggering a contraction.
