Glaucoma is one of the most difficult condition to manage as it requires longstanding medical support which not only are they expensive but also difficulty to find. Some of the patients miss their review for refill because of extenuating circumstances especially the financial constraints involved in traveling. To make matters worse, the vision in most patients is very poor such that they need an additional person to travel with. Majority of patients are on combination of eye drops which is so difficult to follow the routine at times.
Well, IVV Zimba Eye Hospital is now able to provide the first ever in Zambia if not in Africa, Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty. An intervention that will help glaucoma patient have lower IOP without the need of drops. With DSLT, majority of patients will benefit as it will reduced the need of frequent traveling and buying of expensive eye drops.
According to research and statistics done so far, DSLT has proved effective in glaucoma treatment as many patients are able to go off their eye drops or just remain with a single type.
