RETAIL PHARMACY DIARY
Pharmacy retail operations encompass a broad spectrum of diverse activities that significantly deviate from the general perception of ‘Tubili uluchelo tubili akasuba’. There are numerous intricacies involved that remain unknown to the general public, including dispensing, compounding, and identifying errors in prescriptions, which, if left unresolved, could jeopardize patients' lives. This underscores the critical role of pharmacists as the final link in a life-saving treatment plan and the potential for serious health complications if mishandled.
Today's topic revolves around infertility in women.
I recently received a prescription for Clomiphene citrate to be taken once daily for five consecutive days, in conjunction with folic acid. Upon inquiry, the client expressed unfamiliarity with the purpose of the prescribed medication, responding, 'Just provide what the doctor prescribed.' I politely asked if she had undergone hormonal profiling and inquired about any unusual breast secretions, to which she replied affirmatively, indicating the presence of milk secretion (first red flag). I subsequently requested the prescriber's contact information, which the client did not possess.
If I had proceeded with dispensing the prescribed medications without inquiring from the patient, the client would not have received the desired treatment (conceiving) she wanted. This highlights the importance of pharmacists asking questions before dispensing medications, as it is ultimately for the patient's benefit.
To clients: Always provide all necessary information to pharmacy personnel, as this will help identify any potential red flags from the prescription.
