𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 – 𝗗𝗥. 𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗢𝗡 𝗝𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗘

It is with profound sadness and deep sorrow that the Zambia Medical Association announces the passing of a Distinguished Senior Physician Dr. Gordon Jason Silumbe, who died on 26th March 2026.
Born on 4th April 1952, Dr. Silumbe began his early education at Nakonde Primary School before transferring to Kaloko Primary School in Ndola. He later advanced to Masala Secondary School and completed his secondary education at Mkushi Secondary School, Central Province. In 1974, he was admitted to the University of Zambia, where he pursued medical studies (BSc HB, MBChB) and graduated in 1981 as a qualified medical doctor.
Dr. Silumbe began his medical career as a Junior Resident Medical Officer at Ndola Central Hospital, where he later rose to the position of Senior Resident Medical Officer, serving until 1989. He subsequently moved to Wusakile Mine Hospital in Kitwe before taking up the role of Team Doctor for Nkana Football Club between 1989 and 1990. In pursuit of further specialization, he undertook advanced training in anaesthesia and internal medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1990 to 1995.
Returning home in 1996, Dr. Silumbe joined the University Teaching Hospital as a Registrar in Internal Medicine, later advancing to Senior Registrar with the Master of Medicine (MMED) in Internal Medicine from the University of Zambia before being appointed Consultant. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in transforming and strengthening both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training, raising standards of clinical practice and mentoring countless doctors and other medical professionals. In 2017, he moved to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he served as Consultant until 2022. Alongside his clinical duties, he lectured at the University of Zambia, Texila American University, Apex Medical University, and Levy Mwanawasa Medical University, leaving an enduring mark on medical education by shaping future generations of practitioners and specialists.
Through his notable contributions, Dr. Silumbe’s distinguished career was honored with the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Zambia Medical Association. He was instrumental in restoring the Department of Internal Medicine to high standards at the University Teaching Hospital, championed kangaroo care for neonates to reduce infant mortality as Chairman of Infection Prevention, and spearheaded initiatives that dramatically lowered mortality rates at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital. His leadership and vision not only advanced medical training but also transformed clinical practice, leaving a lasting impact on the quality of healthcare delivery in Zambia.
The Zambia Medical Association will hold a professional service in his honor, with the date and venue to be announced following consultations with his family. This service will celebrate his life, his distinguished contributions to the medical fraternity, and his service to the nation. The funeral is taking place at House No. 24563, Mumbwa Road, Lusaka West, near Sarai Gardens and Coca-Cola.
Dr. Silumbe will be remembered as a gallant practitioner, mentor, and leader whose dedication transformed healthcare in Zambia. His legacy of compassion and excellence will endure in the countless lives he touched.
