Pregnancy dreams deserve their own movie 😭
One moment you’re at a wedding, happily eating jollof rice…
Blink once — and you’re giving birth to a goat 🐐

How hormones specifically affect postpartum migraines 🌿

1. Sudden drop in estrogen

During pregnancy, estrogen levels are very high and stable—this often reduces migraines for many women.
After delivery, estrogen drops sharply within days.

🔹 This sudden fall can:

Trigger migraine attacks

Increase headache sensitivity

Worsen migraine intensity

Affect mood and emotional balance

This estrogen drop is the main cause of postpartum migraines.

2. Progesterone changes

Progesterone also falls after birth.

🔹 Low progesterone can:

Increase nervous system sensitivity

Reduce the body’s natural calming effect

Make pain feel stronger and harder to manage

This can explain why migraines may feel more emotionally draining postpartum.

3. Breastfeeding hormones (Prolactin & Oxytocin)

Breastfeeding increases prolactin and oxytocin, which suppress estrogen.

🔹 For some women:

This helps migraines feel calmer

For others, low estrogen continues to trigger migraines

This is why postpartum migraines vary from woman to woman.

4. Cortisol (stress hormone)

Sleep deprivation, emotional stress, and physical recovery raise cortisol levels.

🔹 High cortisol can:

Increase inflammation

Tighten blood vessels

Lower migraine tolerance

This makes migraines more frequent or harder to recover from emotionally.

5. Serotonin fluctuations

Estrogen helps regulate serotonin (the “feel-good” brain chemical).

🔹 When estrogen drops:

Serotonin levels can dip

Pain sensitivity increases

Mood changes and migraines can overlap

This explains why migraines and emotional lows often happen together postpartum.

🌸 The good news

As hormones gradually stabilize over weeks to months, many women experience:

Reduced migraine frequency

Improved emotional balance

Better pain tolerance

Recovery is not instant, but it does happen.
