NHIMA Hosts Nigeria's NHIA

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) of Nigeria completed a three-day benchmarking visit to Zambia at the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) aimed at learning from Zambia’s experience in social protection for its vulnerable population and the Ministry of Health’s collaboration with the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

The visit also focused on learning NHIMA’s operational systems, contribution collection and pooling, member registration, healthcare provider payment mechanisms, fund sustainability and use of data and digital systems.
The exercise included a courtesy call to the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization Country Office in Zambia, the Country Coordinating Mechanism for the Global Fund in Zambia and a visit to the National Heart Hospital which is a NHIMA accredited facility.

The tour was an opportunity for both Authorities to share best practices for health insurance design, and implementation. To NHIMA, the visit served as a vote of confidence and a chance to reflect on areas for improvement while learning from Nigeria’s health reform journey, with both parties agreeing that there is room for more collaboration, cooperation and partnerships between the two parties and African governments at large.

The visit underscores NHIMA’s growing stature as a centre of excellence in health insurance management and reaffirms the Authority’s dedication to delivering sustainable and inclusive health coverage for Zambia.

The NHIMA delegation consisted of heads of all departments for a comprehensive explanation of NHIMA’s entire operation while the Nigerian delegation comprised of NHIA Director Planning, Research and Statistics Dr. Kurfi Abubakar and senior delegates from the NHIA Nigeria as well as representatives from the World Health Organization and Global Fund.

On monday 15th the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) commenced a high level benchmarking engagement with a delegation from Nigeria National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), aimed at strengthening collaboration and shared learning towards the achievement of sustainable Universal Health Coverage.

The day one session held at NHIMA Headquarters, was largely NHIMA-led, with presentations outlining the Authority’s experience in health financing, scheme administration, provider accreditation, ICT systems and benefit package design, followed by an interactive question and answer session. Further engagements and experience sharing with the Nigerian delegation are expected to continue over the course of the visit.
