2nd COMBINED GRADUATION CEREMONY

Celebrating brilliance at Ndola’s School of Bomedical Sciences who held their 2nd combined graduation ceremony today. The Biomedical Society of Zambia was part of this gracious moment and gave special recognition to Kendra Kauseni and Mapalo Mwila as well-deserved best performing student awards for 2022 and 2023 intakes respectively. Congratulations to all graduates 🎓 here’s to the next generation of biomedical innovators shaping Zambia’s future.

Dr. Mazyanga Lucy Liwewe Mazaba is the Regional Director for the Eastern Africa Regional Coordinating Centre of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). Until recently, she served as Director of Public Health Policy and Health Diplomacy at the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI).

A seasoned public health expert and researcher with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mazaba brings deep expertise in virology, epidemiology, laboratory diagnostics, strategic communication, risk assessment, surveillance, and outbreak response. She holds a BSc in Biology and Chemistry, an MSc in Epidemiology, and a Doctorate of Science in Public Health.

Dr. Mazaba has published over 145 scientific articles—including more than 80 as first author—and contributed to numerous book chapters, research papers, and editorials. She has authored five books and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of The Health Press Zambia, ZNPHI’s flagship public health bulletin.

Sten Westgard is Director of Client Services and Technology for Westgard QC, USA. For more than 30 years, Sten has managed the Westgard website and training portal, creating and administering online training, as well as editing and writing hundreds of reports, essays, and applications on quality control, method validation, Six Sigma and other laboratory management topics.

Sten has also presented at conferences and workshops both in the US and abroad (in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia), on topics such as "Westgard Rules", Six Sigma, Risk Management, Method Validation, Measurement Uncertainty and Quality Management. He received an Outstanding Speaker award from the AACC for 2008 through 2012, and 2016.

Sten is an adjunct faculty member at the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota; an adjunct faculty member at the University of Alexandria, Egypt; an adjunct visiting faculty member at Kastruba Medical College of Manipal University, Mangalore, India; and an honorary visiting professor at Jiao Tong University, Shanghai.

BMSZ INDUCTS SIX NEW SCIENTISTS AT RUSANGU UNIVERSITY OATH-TAKING CEREMONY AND GRADUATION

We were honoured to represent the Biomedical Society of Zambia (BMSZ) at the 19th Graduation Ceremony of Rusangu University (RU), held from 5–7 September 2025 in Monze.

On Saturday, 6 September, we inducted six Biomedical Science graduates during a colourful oath-taking ceremony under the School of Health Sciences. We also presented a special shield to Chikungu, the best graduating student in recognition of her excellence and hard work.

In his remarks, BMSZ President Mr Mutale Mubanga encouraged the graduates not to be general biomedical scientists, but to deliberately carve out their niche of expertise within the vast field of biomedical sciences.

We also extend our warm congratulations to the faculty and staff of Rusangu University for their hard work in shaping the next generation of laboratory professionals.

Congratulations to the entire graduating class!
