Where do people buy special chairs needed for special needs classes? I was asked to buy one for my son he is 3 years old and is starting school in a special needs class.

Want to find out the school fees for special schools in Lusaka and recommendations for the best. Our child is speech delayed, and he was in normal school but am thinking of changing him to a special school cause I want him to build understanding. The school is great but when I compare where he is and where kids his age or classmates are, it breaks my heart. I want him to understand the world around him.

I am looking for assistance in supporting my child. He is 6 and speech delayed and you know the learning challenges that come with that. He is currently in mainstream school. He used to be at a Special Needs Centre 2 years ago and was recommended for mainstream.

My emotional stress now is that for obvious reasons, he is not at the same pace with the other kids. The school is aware of his condition and enrolled him with the pretext that they are an all inclusive school. I have not seen support to this effect and anything else to help him, I have had to outsource. I have shared my concerns but there haven't been any changes.

I have so many areas I need assistance with namely;

1. How are parents in a similar situation handling this?

2. Does anyone recommend a school that is all inclusive and is getting benefits from the setup?

3. How do you help your child as a parent in your personal capacity when you have a job that drains your life?

I am really feeling emotionally beat up at the moment.

I have twin girls, one is okay and the other is Autistic. They are almost 4 years old . I've learnt from other mum's in this group of the option of taking her to an ordinary school due to financial constarints. Now my question is; is separating them okay? Taking them to different schools or classes since they are twins? I'm asking my fellow mum's who might be in this same situation as me. I don't have enough funds to ask for expert help yet. Speech delay and socialization is what I'm trying to work on.

Our Experience with Managing Stammering

We went through a phase where stammering showed up, and it honestly worried us at first. But we later learned it’s quite common—about 5–8 out of 10 children experience it at some point during speech development.

What helped us most was changing how we responded. We stopped rushing, correcting, or finishing words, and just gave space to talk. We also slowed down our own speech and kept things calm.

One simple thing that really helped was this: when the child finished talking, we’d repeat the sentence back in slow motion, smoothly. For example, if they said, “I w-w-want juice,” we’d calmly say, “I… want… juice.”

Over time, creating that relaxed, pressure-free space made a real difference for us.

*Beyond the Speech Delay: Temwani’s Continuing Journey* (Long Post)

When Temwani finally started speaking at age 6, I thought the hardest part of our journey was over. For a long time, speech had been our biggest hurdle, so when he began communicating well, I felt such a deep sense of relief. I believed we had crossed the biggest obstacle and that life might now start to look a little more “normal.”

But I’ve since learned that speech delay can sometimes come with other challenges that only become clearer as children grow older, especially after age 5 when academic and developmental expectations increase.

In Temwani’s case, we began noticing difficulties with fine and gross motor skills, as well as comprehension and understanding academic work expected for his age and grade. Some everyday tasks that many children manage more easily can still be challenging for him—things like handwriting, coordinating movements, getting dressed efficiently, eating neatly, using utensils properly, and following multi-step instructions.

We recently had him assessed through a Cambridge child academic development assessment, and the results showed that his reading level is currently similar to that of a 3-year-old, while he is now 7. That gap can feel overwhelming when you think about how much school relies on reading and comprehension.

So we are back to physiotherapy to help strengthen his coordination, handwriting, and daily living skills, alongside extra academic support to help him build his reading and understanding step by step.

There are moments when I worry about the future, but when I pause and look back, I remember a time when we were simply praying for him to communicate. Seeing him express himself today is something I never take for granted.

For now, we keep moving forward one step at a time, holding on to hope and reminding ourselves that just as the speech breakthrough came, growth in these other areas will come too. This too shall pass.

Has anyone else experienced new developmental challenges after speech delay? I would really value hearing your experiences and what has helped your child.
