HYDROCEPHALUS is a condition where a baby’s head begins to swell because there is too much fluid inside the brain. This happens when the ventricles produce more cerebrospinal fluid than the body can handle, or when there is a blockage that stops the fluid from draining properly. Since a baby’s skull has not fully fused, the extra fluid pushes the head to grow bigger.

The good news is that can be treated.
Most babies improve after a shunt is placed to drain the extra fluid and ease the pressure on the brain.

We also perform a modern treatment called Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV). This is a minimally invasive procedure where a small opening is created inside the brain’s ventricles to help fluid flow normally without needing a long-term shunt.

Early attention makes all the difference.

Dr. Kachinga Sichizya and the team performed a transsphenoidal surgery, a specialised and delicate brain procedure that allows surgeons to remove tumors located deep at the base of the brain without opening the skull.

This route allowed the team to reach the tumour through the natural nasal passage and behind the nose, without opening the skull or disturbing large areas of the brain.

Once the sphenoid sinus was opened, the Neurosurgery A -Team created a small opening or window in the bone to reach the area where the tumour was located. From there, the tumour was carefully removed bit by bit.

The surgery was successfully completed, with the tumour safely removed and the patient brought out of theatre in a stable condition.

It is called transsphenoidal surgery. Instead of opening the skull, the neurosurgical team accessed the tumour through the nostrils, carefully working through the natural passage behind the nose to reach the centre of the brain.

A suboccipital craniectomy with C1 laminectomy for a patient living with Chiari malformation, a condition where part of the brain sits lower than it should and presses on the spinal canal.

The surgery was done to create more space at the base of the skull and upper spine, allowing normal flow of spinal fluid and easing pressure on the brain and nerves.

By carefully removing a small section of bone at the back of the head and the first cervical vertebra, the team was able to relieve the compression that causes pain, balance problems and other long-term symptoms.

The surgery was successful and the patient went on to live free from pressure and limitations caused by the condition.

When you meet a patient who has walked through a brain tumour and come out on the other side, you learn just how easily these symptoms can be overlooked.
Chanda shares her early signs to help others stay aware. Her symptoms didn’t show up all at once. They crept in slowly. At first, she dismissed them as stress or lack of sleep. Many people do.
