The budget presented last Friday is, in my view, the definition of insanity. It represents a continuation of a flawed and ineffective course of action, and it's unreasonable to expect better results.

The budget is a clear case of business as usual. It relies on the same policies and strategies that have not led to significant improvements in the past. It lacks a bold change in strategy and an innovative vision for Zambia that would address the root causes of the nation's economic challenges and the ever-widening societal divide between the haves and have-nots.

This approach continues the usual rhetoric of foreign investors-driven growth, which has consistently failed to translate into tangible benefits for the average citizen. There is no evidence of learning or adaptation from past failures. After 61 years of independence, it's unacceptable for our country, which is so rich in resources, to still be inhabited by so many who are poor. We need a fundamental shift in our economic thinking—an independence from a neoliberal bookish, theoretical economic mindset that has repeatedly failed to deliver for the people.

SP YOUTHS PROPOSES ALTERNATIVE 2026 BUDGET WITH FOCUS ON AGRICULTURE AND MINING

Lusaka… Monday September 29, 2025 – The Socialist Party (SP) youths have proposed an alternative 2026 national budget, emphasizing agriculture and mining as key drivers of economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Party officials stated that while their proposal highlights these two sectors, it does not exclude other areas of the economy.

According to the youths, the K15 billion allocation to agriculture in the current budget is inadequate, with K9.2 billion directed to the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

The party argued that this amount gives little hope to the over 1.2 million peasant farmers in rural areas who feed the nation.

They suggested that the number of beneficiaries under FISP should be increased to two million.

The party further proposed investment in locally owned fertilizer production, insisting that such a move would reduce dependency on imports, lower prices, and create employment.

Youth officials stressed the need for policies that prioritize Zambian investors while still allowing foreign participation through partnerships.

The SP also called for massive investment in agricultural research and extension services.

They argued that deploying trained agricultural experts to rural areas would improve farming methods, boost yields, and enhance food security.

In addition, the party youths urged the creation of agro-processing industries to add value to farm produce, create jobs for youths, and strengthen the sector’s contribution to GDP, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 8 on decent work and economic growth.

On mining, the Socialist Party criticized the continued export of raw minerals, claiming it amounted to exporting jobs and weakening the Kwacha.

They proposed halting raw exports and investing in domestic mineral processing to increase revenue and create employment
