EYE CARE FOR ALL ⭐️

A proud milestone for the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) as it successfully performed its first-ever cataract surgeries at the newly opened theatre at AeroMED James Lawless Hospital.

The Service has continued to receive a significant number of elderly patients presenting with impaired vision due to reversible blindness caused by cataracts. Recognizing this growing need, the ZFDS team prioritized bringing specialized surgical services closer to the people, ensuring patients no longer have to travel long distances to access care.

One of the beneficiaries, who had lived with cataracts for three years, shared her emotional testimony. She explained that she had lost hope of ever regaining her sight. However, after visiting the Zambia Flying Doctor Service last week, she received a call just yesterday to come in for surgery. Today, her journey toward restored vision has begun — a truly life-changing moment and a powerful reminder of the impact of accessible healthcare.

The surgical team that made this achievement possible included: Mr. Oliver Chenga,Cataract Surgeon,Mr. Jordan Ngosa,Head of Theatre,Ms. Thelma Sakanya ,Theatre Nurse, Ms. Bertha Lingungi,Ophthalmic Officer, Mr. Bupe Musenge,Anesthetist.

This landmark achievement marks a new chapter in expanding specialized surgical services at the facility and reflects the continued commitment of the Zambia Flying Doctor Service to improving access to quality, specialized healthcare services for communities across Zambia.

We therefore call upon all those available to come through for a free assessment tomorrow from 07:00 hours to 10:00 hours at our hospital in Northrise.

Glasses help correct vision problems such as *nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism*.

Wearing glasses prescribed by a qualified ophthalmic professional will not damage your vision in the long run. However, natural factors such as aging, health conditions, or lifestyle changes can affect your eyesight over time.

✅ Wear your prescribed glasses as advised.
✅ Avoid self-medication or using someone else’s prescription.
✅ Schedule regular eye check-ups to monitor your vision.

Your eyesight matters — take care of it today for a clearer tomorrow.

A RARE CONDITION, A COMMON MISSION: ZFDS CONDUCTS EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF CONJOINED TWINS.⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) has successfully evacuated two-day-old conjoined twins from Kitwe teaching hospital to Lusaka's University Teaching Hospital mother and child for emergency specialized neonatal care.

The life-saving mission was conducted this morning following a request from Kitwe Teaching Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent, Dr. Chileshe Mboni.

According to Dr. Mboni, the twins were delivered yesterday at the hospital through a caesarean section.

He explained that the babies are dicephalus parapagus conjoined twins (sharing one body with two heads) and were experiencing respiratory distress accompanied by peripheral cyanosis, requiring urgent specialist intervention.

Noting the condition of the conjoined twins air transport was considered fastest.

ZFDS deployed its Caravan aircraft, registration 9J-FDS, for the emergency operation. The aircraft was flown by Director of Aviation Services , Lasford Manchisi, with Co-Pilot Elvis Kite.

During the flight from Kitwe to Lusaka, paramedic Susan Banda and midwife Herman Mwale closely monitored the twins’ vital signs and oxygen levels to ensure their stability throughout the journey.

Upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, the ZFDS team safely handed over the mother and the conjoined twins to a specialized medical team for advanced neonatal care.

ZFDS CONDUCTS TRIPLE MEDICAL EVACUATION ⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) today successfully conducted a triple medical evacuation involving three patients with spinal injuries.

The first patient, a 47-year-old male, was admitted to Kasama General Hospital following a road traffic accident that resulted in a spinal injury. The evacuation was initiated following a request from the Kasama General Hospital through the Ministry of Health, as the patient required specialised spinal stabilisation by a neurosurgeon at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

ZFDS deployed its Caravan aircraft, 9J-AGC, for the mission. The aircraft was flown by Director of Aviation Services, Lasford Manchisi, with Co-Pilot Siposami Zulu. The morning operation was successfully conducted from Kasama, with the patient safely transported to Lusaka for further specialised care.

In a parallel operation, ZFDS also repatriated two patients who had been discharged from Fairview Hospital and Italian hospital in Lusaka to their homes in Luanshya and Kitwe on the Copperbelt. The operation was carried out by ZFDS Acting Deputy Director of Aviation Services Patrick Kawanu, assisted by Co-Pilot Wael Donbouky.

The two patients, both paraplegic, had been receiving specialised treatment in Lusaka and were safely handed over to the workers compensation personnel and their families upon arrival.

ZFDS deployed Paramedics Bupe Mulenga and Chisanga Bwalya for the Kasama medical evacuation, while Nelly Njamba and Salifyanji Nachamba were assigned to the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) flight, ensuring continuity of medical care throughout all operations.

As ZFDS, we remain committed to ensuring safety and the delivery of enhanced medical care for all.
