Ahead of 2022 (4 February) we are sharing a clinical trial study from Zahedan, Iran on The effects of foot reflexology on pain and physiological indicators in children with leukaemia under chemotherapy.
The theme of this year’s World Cancer Day campaign is ‘Close the Care Gap’ highlighting the inequities in cancer care across the world that cost lives. The aim is to raise awareness that ‘income, education, location, orientation, age, disability and lifestyle can negatively affect care”.
This clinical trial study was performed on 80 school-age children (aged 6–12 years) with leukaemia admitted to the haematology ward of a teaching hospital in Zahedan, Iran from February 1, 2020, to December 20, 2020. The inclusion criteria were as follows: leukaemia and prior IT (intrathecal injection) administration of chemotherapy.
Method: This clinical trial included 80 children with leukaemia. The participants received 20 min foot reflexology (10 min each foot). The primary measured outcomes included pain and physiological indicators (blood pressure and heart rate).
Results: The results showed that foot reflexology had a significant effect on reducing pain (p = 0.002) and improving physiological indicators [blood pressure (p = 0.002) and heart rate (p = 0.003)].
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that reflexology, as a method of distraction in children, could reduce pain during IT and was effective on physiological parameters after IT. Therefore, this method should be implemented as a low-cost intervention by nurses and other health groups to reduce pain during IT procedures.
