THE ROAD BACK TO BULAWAYO
Theme: City Person Returns to Roots | Setting: Bulawayo โ†’ Tsholotsho, Matabeleland
Cultural Flavor: Ndebele

Nkosi Dube had lived in Bulawayo for fourteen years. He had a flat, a car, a corporate job โ€” and a body slowly falling apart.

The headaches had started two years ago. Then the insomnia. Then what his doctor described as "stress-related hypertension" โ€” high blood pressure at 38, driven by deadlines, noise, and a diet built mostly on takeaway food and energy drinks.
His mother called from Tsholotsho on a Thursday. "Nkosi. Come home. Just come."

His grandmother, Ugogo Sibongile, was 81 years old. She said little when he arrived. She simply looked at him the way old women look at things โ€” completely and without hurry.
The next morning, she woke him before sunrise. "Sizahamba," she said. We are going.

They walked the bush edge as the sky turned orange. Ugogo named plants as she moved โ€” insukumbili for inflammation, umhlabelo for stomach troubles. She stopped at a woody shrub with small grey-green leaves.
"Umhlonyane," she said softly. "Isihlahla sekhaya." โ€” The home plant.

African wormwood โ€” Artemisia afra. She prepared it as a tea that evening, combined with fresh ginger. She also took away Nkosi's phone and made him sit under the stars in silence for one hour.
"This too is medicine," she told him firmly.

Six months later, Nkosi's blood pressure had dropped significantly. He still took his medication โ€” but he also made umhlonyane tea every evening, walked each morning, and called his grandmother every Thursday.

"Whatever you're doing," his doctor said at the next review, smiling, "keep doing it."
"It's a family recipe," Nkosi replied.

> ๐Ÿ’ก Health Tip โ€” Umhlonyane (Artemisia afra):
> One of Southern Africa's most researched traditional plants, used for colds, flu, fever, headaches, and as a relaxant. Modern studies confirm significant antimicrobial activity. It should NOT replace hypertension medication โ€” always use alongside, and with your doctor's knowledge. Avoid during pregnancy.

MBUYA'S GARDEN OF SECRETS

Theme: Village Grandmother | Setting: Murehwa Village, Mashonaland East
Cultural Flavor: Shona

Everyone in Murehwa called her Mbuya Chipo โ€” Grandmother Gift โ€” and the name had never been more fitting.

Her garden was not like other gardens. There were no neat rows of maize or bright sunflowers. Instead, it was a living, breathing medicine chest. Zumbani grew along the eastern fence. Muhacha stood tall near the gate. Mufandichimuka crept quietly between the stones. And in the corner, carefully tended like a firstborn child, grew a cluster of mukarati โ€” a plant whose bark her own grandmother had taught her to respect.

When little Tanaka came to her burning with fever โ€” his mother frantic, the clinic two hours away โ€” Mbuya Chipo moved with the calm of someone who had done this a thousand times.

She gathered fresh zumbani leaves โ€” Lippia javanica โ€” and boiled them gently over a fire. The steam rose in curling ribbons, filling the small hut with a sharp, clean scent that itself seemed medicinal. She prepared a mild infusion for Tanaka to sip slowly.
"Inorwisa kurwara kwemuviri wose," she said quietly. โ€” It fights sickness in the whole body.

By evening, Tanaka's fever had softened. By morning, he was chasing the chickens again.

His mother Rudo began sitting with Mbuya Chipo every Saturday โ€” learning names, uses, preparations, and most importantly, the limits of each plant.

"Zumbani is for fever, cold, and chest pain," Mbuya taught her. "But if the fever does not break in two days โ€” you walk to that clinic. The plants are the beginning. Not always the end."

Rudo wrote everything down in a small red notebook. She called it: Mbuya's Garden of Secrets. It is still in her family today.

> ๐Ÿ’ก Health Tip โ€” Zumbani (Lippia javanica):
> Widely used across Zimbabwe for colds, flu, chest infections, and fever โ€” as steam inhalation or warm infusion. Studies confirm its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Use in moderate amounts. If fever persists beyond 48 hours โ€” especially in children โ€” seek clinical care immediately as it may indicate malaria.

Men & Women,

- Guchu /Imbiza is a password
- Neem tree is a cheatcode
- fasting is a hacking tool.

These three can change everything that is troubling you without even consulting me.

Men & Women,

Listen to me once and hear me twice.

When you take antibioticsโ€”any type of antibioticโ€”remember that they kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria. Sometimes the effects can go beyond the intended purpose and disturb the natural balance of the body.

Possible side effects may include:

Stomach bloating

Diarrhea

Yeast infections

Inflammation of the gut

Gut irritation or ulceration

After taking antibiotics, it is important to restore balance in the gut. This is where probiotics act as โ€œpeacekeepers,โ€ helping to replenish the good bacteria.

One of the most affordable natural sources of probiotics is fermented porridge (porridge remunyikwa). That is why I encourage taking fermented porridge together with Guchu/Imbiza, especially after intermittent fasting.

Some may ask, โ€œIs the maheu we buy from shops good?โ€

Store-bought maheu often contains additives, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives. These ingredients may negatively affect gut health. It is therefore important to read and understand ingredient labels before consuming processed products.

If you choose to take maheu, I encourage you to prepare it at homeโ€”without additives, artificial sweeteners, or preservativesโ€”to preserve its natural probiotic benefits.

When gut balance is disturbed, some people experience itching around the a**l area, persistent irritation, or yeast infections. In women, untreated yeast infections may spread and cause further reproductive discomfort and complications.

Our elders, though not formally educated, understood the value of traditional fermented foods. They fed babies fermented porridge because it was gentle on the stomach and easy to digest.

Let us learn from that wisdom and be intentional about what we eat.

Men & Women,

There is a leaf many people speak highly of because of its wide traditional uses.

Its name is Neem.

Neem has long been used in traditional systems of medicine for supporting general wellness. Many people use it to help manage:

Blood sugar balance

Blood pressure support

Body pain and inflammation

Cholesterol balance

Circulation support

In some traditions, neem is also described as a โ€œblood cleanser,โ€ meaning it is believed to support detoxification and overall blood health.

In Kiswahili, it is called Muarobaini (sometimes pronounced Muarubaini), which means โ€œthe tree of forty cures,โ€ reflecting its many traditional applications. In India, it is often referred to as the โ€œvillage pharmacyโ€ because of its broad use in Ayurvedic practices.

However, it is important to understand that while neem has many traditional benefits, it is not a magic cure. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer require proper medical supervision. Herbal remedies can support health, but they should be used responsibly and with informed guidance.

The native intelligence of our African forefathers was unmatched.

Their knowledge of herbs, remedies, and natural treatments laid the foundation for modern medicine we see today.

Much of todayโ€™s health breakthroughs are built on the wisdom they discovered centuries ago.

23/02/2026

We often live as if weโ€™re immortals, but the reality is that our time here is finite. Itโ€™s time we normalize having those serious, uncomfortable conversations with ourselvesโ€”the ones about legacy and loss.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children isnโ€™t just your presence, but preparing them for your absence. Itโ€™s about equipping them with the strength, skills, and memories to stand tall on their own.

If life happens for you today, what will life look like for them tomorrow?
