WHAT IS A COLONOSCOPY?

A colonoscopy is an exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and re**um.
During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the re**um. The camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.
If necessary, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed through the scope during a colonoscopy. Tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken during a colonoscopy as well.
A colonoscopy can be used to:
• Investigate intestinal signs and symptoms. A colonoscopy can help explore possible causes of abdominal pain, re**al bleeding, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
• Screen for colon cancer. If you're age 50 or older and at average risk of colon cancer a colonoscopy is may be recommended every 10 years or sometimes sooner to screen for colon cancer.
• Look for more polyps. If you have had polyps before, a follow-up colonoscopymay be recommended to look for and remove any additional polyps. This is done to reduce your risk of colon cancer.

WHAT IS A GASTROSCOPY?

A Gastroscopy also referred to as an Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is a procedure where a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is used to look inside the oesophagus (gullet), stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
The endoscope has a light and a camera at one end. The camera sends images of the inside of your oesophagus, stomach and duodenum to a monitor.
A gastroscopy can be used to:
• investigate problems such as difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or persistent abdominal (tummy) pain
• diagnose conditions such as stomach ulcers or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
• treat conditions such as bleeding ulcers, a blockage in the oesophagus, non-cancerous growths (polyps) or small cancerous tumours.
