Lesson 1

AUTISM.
Fully known as Autism Spectrum Disorder and it is a developmental disability pertaining to the differences in the function of the brain. ASD being a spectrum (position on a scale between two extreme points) means that everyone with this condition is different from the other.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASD are:
1. delayed language skills.
2. delayed movement skills.
3. unusual eating or sleeping habits.
4. unusual mood or emotional reactions.
5. delayed cognitive or learning skills. (some people with ASD can have average or above average intelligence and others may have learning disabilities).
6. gastrointestinal issues (constipation).
7. challenges in speech development.
8. repetitive behavior.
9. poor social skills.

It is well to note that it is NOT caused by:
1. bad parenting.
2. vaccines.
3. diet.
4. infections or diseases.

DIAGNOSIS
It is very hard to diagnose a child of ASD. Professionals such as doctors, occupational therapists and social workers will have to assess the child's behavior and or development to make a diagnosis. However, by the age of 2, a diagnosis by the professional is considered reliable.

TREATMENT.
Treatment for ASD can be narrowed down into the following categories:
1. behavioral.
2. developmental.
3. social-relational.
4. pharmacological
5. psychological
6. complementary and alternative.

ADHD, anxiety/depression and epilepsy are other conditions that can be brought up by ASD.
