IF I WAS A WRITER
By Valentine James
If I was a writer
Not a vendor nor an unemployed youth
If only I was a noble writer
One who spoke through the trails of a blue pen
I would write a poem and recite the cries, of a Zimbabwean man
On a white paper I’d pour the heart of an aggrieved citizen
And let the world know the forbidden thoughts, of a common man
I would ink about the promises made when its election time
The 2,2 million jobs and yes the bullet trains
I will tell the world why, I am not a happy man
As I go cast a vote that should, but might not change a thing
Like a courtship of fake romance, these politicians treat us
Promising us heaven just before we vote
But we know it’s a deal with Lucifer we’ve sold our souls
with the mark of an X our fate is sealed
If I was a writer, if only I was a read writer
I would write about the disgrace me and my countrymen endure
When our parents’ votes are bought at party rallies
With a bag of rice and a sack of beans
Its moral injustice, believe me you
To use food as human bait
Fishing votes from the less privileged
If indeed you truly care
How is it they can’t afford a bag of rice
When it is you who runs government?
If I was a writer, I’d tell you more
More about the vehicles bought for rural chiefs
They drive expensive cars to distant hospitals
Hospitals understaffed and with no medicine
Its ironic, the foolishness of it all
To flashy cars my chiefs can’t say no
Even when their hospitals are understaffed and medicine running low
Corrupted they fail to say no
No to bribery No to persuasive talk
Talk of Spaghetti roads when the none spaghetti are full of pot holes
If I was a writer, even just for a day
Believe me you, the world would know
That my Country is open for business
Though I’m still unemployed
Rumours and promises of investments, yes I have heard
But just like you I’m waiting too
Waiting to see, if again we shall be fooled
“Operation Restore legacy”, which big looter is in jail now?
The criminals around him, where are they now?
If I was a writer, would the state hire me?
Would they publish
That I think I saw a crocodile logo, on the military’s uniform
Or would I be punished, for my lack of understanding
Understanding of the relevance, of a croc on a uniform not mine
If I was a writer, I would say it all
I won’t write about the 15 billion, No
Or why I think the looters are walking scot free
Because these are just my thoughts, they are hardly facts
I will never mention, believe me you
That it seems normal in this land of mine
For a politician to have farms more than nine
Whilst many struggle with no land to farm
But still sing hondo yeminda, Chimurenga songs
We won the war so it seems, but lost the battle such is life
If I was a writer, I would write with caution
Lest I die because of words not said
If I was a writer, would you read my poems?
Poems about a great nation I know
It uses more than three currencies
but confusingly suffers from liquidity crisis
more than half of its city’s citizens reduced to vendors
And the government enforces a law which says vending is illegal
How it expects them to take care of their families I’m yet to know
It says they pollute the streets so I heard
Which leaves me wondering I have to say
Which ranks first on the government’s priorities?
the street or the street vendor they despise?
If I was a writer, I would be the peoples voice
And the world will know, the real voice of the people
I’d ask why, Why?
Why should anyone trust our politicians?
They raise civil servants’ salaries when its election time
They are seen at churches in white robes when its election time
They even stop harassing vendors but its only for a time
I would sincerely write, if I was a writer
Not a poem but a letter
To whom it may concern, I’d ask again
Why, why should we trust politicians with our country’s fate?
If I was a writer and you read my articles
I would tell you to vote, yes make choices
But know that our vote changes nothing but our leaders
So even after elections we will still have problems
But not so severe if we choose to be involved
Join me in a noble cause explained below
I’m not a writer nor a politician
Lest I write and they think I’m campaigning
