Island Hospice & Healthcare

Island Hospice & Healthcare We walk with patients and families through illness, loss, and recovery.

Offering palliative care, home nursing, counselling, training & medical equipment hire across Zimbabwe. For 43 years, Island Hospice and Healthcare (formerly Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe) has been improving the lives of those facing chronic or terminal illnesses. Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe was established in 1979 as the first Hospice in Africa and is a well-known centre of excellence in palliative care. The initial objectives were to provide direct home-based palliative care to those with a life threatening illness and their families and a comprehensive bereavement service. In 2014, Island Hospice Service Zimbabwe, changed its name to Island Hospice and Healthcare to better communicate the expansion of its services within its holistic approach to palliative care developed over the last three decades. The organization has managed to build a network of partners and services that reach vulnerable groups in society which include displaced peoples, orphans and other vulnerable children, young care-givers, widows and widowers, senior citizens and marginalized communities. Our services have expanded to include not only direct palliative care and bereavement counselling but also community health care initiatives, capacity building and training for healthcare professionals.

Today we gathered to honour two remarkable women whose work has shaped Island Hospice in lasting ways.

We celebrated Sister Audrey, who after 10 years of dedicated service retires having led our nursing agency with compassion, strength, and unwavering support for patients and their families.

We also honoured Sister Frances, who after 34 years with Island has been truly revolutionary in the care we provide — mentoring generations of nurses and helping define what palliative care looks like in practice, not just in principle.

Their legacy lives on in the patients they comforted, the families they walked alongside, and the many nurses they trained and inspired. We are deeply grateful.

Last week Sister Audrey was at Westridge Primary School to receive proceeds from their Breast Cancer Awareness campaign and to speak to the children about breast cancer.
We’re deeply grateful to Westridge Primary School for their kindness and for helping build early awareness amongst pupils 💚
