We spent time with the students affairs team at the Great Zimbabwe University,this is the team with which we are on call with way past midnight when a student falls ill,organizing ambulances ,admissions ,doctors and medications.From emergency appendectomies ,nephrectomies,laparotomies ,to complex medical emergencies.
In the spirit of engagement,we met to discuss on how we can make the service even better!

The silent healthcare crisis of getting older in Zimbabwe

For medical aid to work ,you need a balanced book that has older people mixed with younger people,the well and unwell.The resources of the younger population support the expenses of the older ( who at this time are less economically active and depend on pensions).When the younger population gets older they too get support from their younger cohort.
In Zimbabwe people wait to get sick or older to look for medical aid , as a result most schemes are made up of people who are unwell (adverse selection )
Result is no medical scheme is keen to insure anyone over the age of 60,the few that do are forced to charge very high premiums out of the reach of many.

Solutions :

1. The medical community needs to create a product that caters for the over 60 population that no one is willing to insure and run a chronic disease management plan
2.More young people need to consider paying into medical aid to create a resource pool that is balanced
3.Get medical aid you can afford before you are 60.
