In January 2026, our partner in Zimbabwe, Fivet Animal Health, hosted a specialised training session for veterinarians and branch supervisors, strengthening diagnostic knowledge across laboratory testing, sampling practices and feed analysis.

The programme explored:

- The role of laboratory diagnostics in evidence-based veterinary care
- Cost–benefit insights on key tests including NDV ELISA, E. coli water testing and Bovid 5 scours
- Best practice microbiology and PCR sample collection
- Feed analysis and mycotoxin detection to protect herd and flock performance

Adapted from learnings shared at the 2024 Zoetis Diagnostic Conference in Kenya, the session marks the first training of the year within Fivet’s ongoing diagnostic capacity-building programme.

Through continued collaboration, we strengthen the tools veterinarians need to detect disease earlier, guide treatment decisions and protect farm productivity.

What is Lumpy Skin Disease?

Lumpy Skin Disease (L*D) is a highly infectious viral disease that affects cattle and is mainly spread by biting insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and ticks. The disease causes serious production losses through reduced weight gain, decreased milk production, infertility, and damage to hides. Early detection and prevention are critical to protecting your herd.

Visible Signs to Watch For

Farmers should regularly inspect cattle for the following symptoms:

- Firm round skin nodules or lumps on the body, neck, legs, and udder
- Fever and loss of appetite
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Watery eyes and nasal discharge
- Reduced milk production
- Lameness or difficulty walking
- Skin wounds that may become infected

Animals showing these signs should be isolated immediately

Prevention Measures & Best Practices

Effective control of Lumpy Skin Disease relies on prevention and good herd management:

- Vaccinate cattle annually against Lumpy Skin Disease
- Control insects through regular dipping and spraying
- Maintain clean housing and surroundings to reduce insect breeding
- Isolate sick animals to prevent disease spread
- Restrict movement of infected or newly introduced cattle
- Disinfect equipment, vehicles, and handling areas regularly

Lumpy Skin Disease can spread quickly but can be controlled through early action, vaccination, and proper biosecurity practices. Regular monitoring and preventative management help keep cattle healthy and productive.

Visit or contact your nearest Fivet Animal Health Branch for vaccines, parasite control products, and professional guidance on protecting your herd.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER QUALITY

Water quality is a critical factor in animal production, as livestock consume nearly twice as much water as feed. Ensuring access to clean, safe water is essential for maintaining animal health, performance, and overall farm productivity. The Fivet Laboratory offers reliable water testing services to help you safeguard your livestock.

Poor water quality can lead to serious consequences, including mortalities, stunted growth, reduced milk or egg production, and compromised product quality. Contaminated water may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxic substances that negatively affect animal health and farm profitability.

Microbial analysis of water is a key component of water quality management. This testing identifies and measures harmful microorganisms such as bacteria (including coliforms and E. coli), which may not be visible to the naked eye. Detecting microbial contamination early allows farmers to take corrective action before outbreaks, production losses, or disease spread occur.

Regular laboratory testing provides peace of mind and supports better farm management decisions. By proactively monitoring water quality, farmers can reduce risk, protect livestock health, and maintain optimal production levels.

Contact your nearest Fivet branch for guidance on proper sample collection and to arrange professional water testing through the Fivet Laboratory!
