It's National Grief & Bereavement Day π
Do you know someone who has lost a loved one? Knowing how to best support them or what to say can be hard.
The most important thing is to reach out! Here are some tips on how to reach out:
π€ Spend time together - offer to run errands with them, have a coffee together, watch a movie, or just be there with them
π€ Be a companion - be their company, with or without talking
π€ Offer to help with tasks - clean their car, mow the lawn, pick up groceries, walk their dog
π€ Ask what they need - Each person and stage of grief is unique; if you're unsure how to support them, ask!
π€ Talk about their loved one - Ask them to share a story or memory, share moments and stories you have with their loved one
π€ Silence is okay - they may not want to talk too much or spend as much time together, and that is okay! Keep reaching out every so often and inviting them to things
π€ Respect their boundaries - most importantly, the best way to support someone grieving is to respect their needs and wishes
Introducing the Marv Chantler Legacy Award π
This award is presented annually by Matthews House Hospice Foundation to an individual, family or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the ongoing development and sustainability of Matthews House Hospice.
In its inaugural year, we chose to honour none other than the man himself, Marv Chantler.
From joining the Board of Directors in 2008, Marv has been a champion of development and sustainability here at Matthews House. As a visionary and builder of ideas, teams, and strategy, Matthews House Hospice is the special place it is today because of his commitment to our mission, vision, and values. From being a volunteer led community hospice in 2008, then a 4-bed hospice on Kingsmere Crescent, and to the new 10-bed residential and community program hospice here on Wellington Street, Marv has been a crucial component to the development and sustainability of hospice care in our community. As a volunteer, donor, advocate, and magnificent fundraiser, Marv continues to ensure Matthews House Hospice and hospice care is at the forefront of community generosity and is top-of-mind for those needing hospice care and grief and bereavement support.
We continue to be inspired by and are forever grateful to have Marv Chantler on our team. Thank you for all that you have done and all that you continue to do for our residents, clients, their families and our community.
