Just going to post this article about research being done into the benefits of touch, not just for physical stresses, but for mental health. Much of what I tell my clients involves how we can work on their physical ailments, but I also always like to emphasize that their mental status and health is just as important. By helping reduce the mental stress perception with touch, we can get the nervous system to shift out of a “fight or flight” adrenaline and cortisol based state, and into a “rest and digest” or relaxation response. Not only is this great for your mental health and coping mechanisms, but it’s good for the physical aches and pains that are increased by stress hormones circulating in the body.
Hope you find this article enlightening and know that I take your mental health just as seriously as your physical health!

A new study presents novel insights on the mental health benefits of touch.

Hey everyone, been quite quiet as of late, but was thinking of trying to get some good information out to people in the coming weeks about topics you’re interested in! Give me some feedback and let me know if you have questions about anything. If it’s in my scope of practice, I’ll do my best to answer and if it’s not, I can at least point you in the right direction for useful information.
Enjoy our mild (for this time) sunny weekend! Get some fresh air and boost some of those feel good neurotransmitters!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to keep you in the loop around guidelines that are set out by our governing body - the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
As Massage Therapists, no matter where we practice, are deemed a healthcare service, the mask mandate will continue until further notice for in person attendance of any appointment. This means that your therapist is required to wear a mask in your presence and vice versa, just as you would when attending any other medical appointment, currently.
I have been masking to provide treatments since prior to the provincial mandate to wear masks in public spaces in July, 2020. I will continue to wear a mask in accordance with our mandate as healthcare providers and also to evaluate a risk vs benefit scenario to providing any treatment with all clients.
I thank you all for your patience and understanding in this matter, which is set forth by the Ministry of Health of Ontario.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Hi everyone. As you may know, last week, the Government of Ontario gave the go ahead for RMT’s to start practicing. I have so many mixed feelings about this. I have missed all my clients so very much in the last few months. I have missed receiving my own treatment, but I am also worried about the impact of reopening on our numbers for infections of Covid-19. I am currently undertaking certifications put forth by Public Health Ontario in regards to disinfection processes and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. I am also sourcing that equipment for use while I am treating. I have set a tentative Back to Work date of June 29th, but please know, my schedule will be different. Part of our legislation around returning to work states that this needs to be a gradual return, giving priority to clients who are highest in need (i.e. whose health will significantly deteriorate without treatment) and to do less treatments in a day in order to make sure disinfection is complete and thorough.
When I make a trip to your house, I will be contacting you just prior to your appointment in order to do a current screening around your health at the moment. I would also ask that if you don’t mind, you would provide the sheets for me to treat, to minimize any chance of cross contamination between my house and yours.
Massage therapy will be a little different for a while going forward. Here is a post that our professional association put out that has some useful info. If you have any questions, please feel free to call, text or email me for clarification.

I get people asking me frequently whether I think their child is able to have massage. Here’s my best answer - ANYONE can have massage! I have massaged people from 6 days to 90 years old! With permission, here’s a picture of an 8 year old client getting ready to have a treatment, and yes, he lasted a whole hour. And don’t worry if you think your kid couldn’t last a full hour or withstand pressure - the treatment is geared to them! All my treatments are done with feedback from the client and the utmost respect around their wishes and goals for treatment.
Just one more bit of information...I’m not sure how long this little hiatus of treatments is going to last, but I just wanted to mention that for small businesses and the self employed, it can be super helpful if you’d like to purchase a “gift card” towards your next service. If you’re interested, please let me know. Massage is great for everyone, any age, any conditions, and awesome for stress relief. I can’t wait to see you all again, hopefully sooner rather than later. 😊

03/17/2020

Hello again all, so yesterday my governing body, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, sent out a directive that all non-essential therapy treatments should be halted until further notice. As it stands right now, I am looking at a case by case basis into rescheduling clients. I want to do everything I can to help mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus. This is a super hard decision to make, as I’m sure you can appreciate for any self employed or small business owner, and I will be in contact with each of you individually as the situation evolves. If anyone feels like they’d like to purchase a voucher for a massage treatment in the future, please know this is much appreciated and a super supportive way to help out small businesses. Feel free to contact me any time. We can discuss upcoming treatments and potential for rescheduling and how best to proceed while keeping everyone as safe as possible. Be well everyone.

03/14/2020

Hi everyone, I hate to add to the over abundance of material you’ve all been receiving about this Covid-19 situation, but just a friendly reminder...please, if you have travelled in the past 14 days prior to your appointment with me, please consider rescheduling. If you have been in contact with those that have travelled, please reschedule. If you are feeling unwell, please reschedule. And please know, I will do likewise! Personally, I have people in my immediate family that are immune compromised and would not do well to be exposed to the virus. I know that many of my clients do as well, so I promise you that if I am notified that I have come into contact with anyone, or start having any symptoms myself, you can rest assured that I will make clients aware and self-isolate.
Thanks to all for your understanding and be safe and well.

Having said this, I am booking into June now, so please try to schedule in advance in order to avoid disappointment!

I don’t expect people to read this whole article on the Cranial Nerves. Maybe only Neurology lovers like me get excited about reading this stuff, but take a look at some of the pictures of where your cranial nerves are located and what functions they serve. It may help to remind you that when neck and head posture isn’t good, these nerves may be impinged or irritated. And that can lead to many different symptoms in our head and face amongst other things. I love hearing that a couple of sessions of treatment has helped resolve head or facial pain, altered sensation and other complaints. Remember to tell your RMT about any symptoms in this area. You may be surprised at how much we can help.

Today is day and a good opportunity to remind everyone that is living with any mental health issues that help is out there.
I lIke to think that Massage Therapists do our part in this as well. This article shows the studies that are being done around Massage Therapy and it’s positive effects on mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. And it’s not just the mental aspects of these issues that benefit! Often times, when anxiety and depression are at their worst, physical complaints, such as pain, will also increase. Let your massage therapist know if you have issues with Mental Health and you may just be surprised at the benefit both mentally and physically that you get from your treatment.

I promised myself I would be better about keeping up my business page for 2019. So, first, let me wish you all - friends, clients (or both) or just those seeking out information about Massage Therapy, a very happy and healthy 2019. I liked the sound of this article and study. Yes, a small sample size, but research is being done every day! And it’s not only the purely physical benefits either; the psychological benefits of massage are being studied as well and they are big too! That’s promising for those who find that their mental state plays into pain issues.
Happy reading everyone. I look forward to treating you in 2019!

Winding down 2017 and realizing how great it has been to treat so many people in my clinic and housecall based practice. I have learned so much from all of my clients and enjoy being a part of your wellness goals. Thanks to all of you who have been patient and encouraging while I got my own practice going. Also, thanks to my wonderful clients who cleared their stairs and walkways in our first snowy day of this winter to help me transport all my equipment safely. I am fully booked until Tuesday January 9 for housecalls and until January 17 at the clinic. Don't forget to book for the New Year and start 2018 off on the right path to health!
