Chiropractic for animals in addition to normal veterinary check-ups is the best way to keep your animal happy and healthy and/or performing to its peak potential. Chiropractic is a drug-free approach to animal health care. Chiropractors focus on keeping the nervous system healthy for the benefit of all body systems including the musculo-skeletal system. Animal chiropractic involves adjustment of subluxations of the spinal column and extremity joints . A subluxation is defined as a spinal misalignment or joint dysfunction resulting in a neurological or biomechanical dysfunction. A chiropractic adjustment is a short lever, high velocity controlled thrust by hand or instrument that is directed at specific articulations to correct vertebral subluxations. Animal chiropractors do not dispense medications, perform surgery, inject medications or attempt to replace necessary traditional veterinary care. What is a certified Veterinary Chiropractor? The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) is an organization that unites members of the veterinary and chiropractic professions for the advancement of animal chiropractic care. The organization sets standards for intensive educational programs, and certifications of trained doctors. Licensed doctors of chiropractic who have passed AVCA-approved postgraduate programs in animal chiropractic are eligible to sit for the AVCA Board Examinations. In order to become AVCA-certified in animal chiropractic, a graduate from one of the approved programs must pass both written and practical examinations prepared by the AVCA. After their initial certification doctors must attend continuing education classes on a regular basis to keep current on new and advanced techniquest in order to maintain certification. AVCA certified doctors are trained in motion palpation, static palpation, gait analysis and biomechanics as well as specific adjusting techniques developed just for animals.
