Ontario Association of Radiologists The OAR works to address radiology’s critical position in a rapidly changing health care environme

The OAR is the Voice of Radiology in Ontario representing the 1,000 radiologist physicians who specialise in medical imaging. The OAR works to address the needs of its member and to ensure that radiology’s critical position in a rapidly changing health care environment continues to meet the wide spectrum of patient care needs including access to a timely diagnosis, reducing wait lists, ensuring th

e availability of modern diagnostic equipment and technologies, and the adoption of emerging diagnostic examinations and procedures proven to be of medical benefit to patients. Ontario’s radiologists are medical consultants to all referring physicians and other allied health professionals. Radiology’s role is central to the detection and management of a wide range of diseases and conditions.

“ Radiology’s role is central to patient care needs and disease management, with a wide choice of tools and techniques available for the detection, staging and treatment. Radiology saves lives.”

Since 2000, the OAR and its members worked with the Ontario government to successfully improve patient access to CT and MRI scanners through the province’s Wait Time Priority program and by its earlier collaboration with the Ministry of Health that resulted in a major expansion of CT and MRI scanners across Ontario that have resulted in dramatic reductions in wait times for Ontario patients. Through its advocacy efforts and publication of numerous high profile reports, the OAR has been directly responsible for improving patient access across Ontario to diagnostic imaging tests, significantly reducing wait lists, raising the standard and quality of testing through facility accreditation, making recommendations to improve patients’ access to a modern diagnostic infrastructure, as well as developing a broad on-going educational program for physicians and technologists, and developing several patient-focussed proposals for government consideration and action to ensure radiology equipment renewal.

Join us in congratulating our esteemed breast imaging colleague, Dr. Jean Seely who was just named as a 2024 Order of Ontario recipient for her tremendous contribution to medicine.

An internationally recognized authority in setting the standard for excellence in breast imaging, Dr. Jean Seely has changed clinical practice guidelines for mammography. She understood from her hands-on role as an academic radiologist that we were missing cancers in younger women resulting in hundreds of preventable cancer deaths every year. She has dedicated her career to building her case through clinical research resulting in landmark studies that have led to a better understanding of how starting screening patients at age 40 impacts breast cancer morbidity and mortality.

Please join the OAR in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Jean Seely for her work advancing the interests and health care needs of women.

Thank you Hologic for your powerful video. The Ontario Association of Radiologists values our relationship and common goal of empowering and educating women on the importance of breast screening at age 40.

Early Detection Saves Lives.

Important News for Ontario Women. Women aged 40-74 are now able to self-refer for a mammogram without a requisition from their family doctor.

The OAR is so proud of the work we accomplished alongside other organizations and our breast cancer survivors’ advocates, who worked hand in hand with the Ontario Government and Sylvia Jones to make this dream a reality.

Protect your future, Schedule your screening today. Early detection saves lives.

Women like Sherry Wilcox of Toronto have spoken eloquently about how their lives were terribly impacted by the outdated and flawed Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care“. OAR Calls for Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care to be Disbanded. The CTFPHC inability to modernise its breast screening guidelines considering the compelling evidence and decisions by most provinces to start screening at age 40 demonstrates that this is an archaic organisation, trapped in old concepts.

Women like Sherry Wilcox of Toronto have spoken eloquently about how their lives were terribly impacted by the outdated and flawed Canadian Task Force guidelines. “The Canadian Task Force Guidelines negatively affected my ability to get a mammogram at age 40. At age 42 I began battling aggressive breast cancer for the next two years. Early screening saves lives, results in less aggressive life-altering treatments and will save money. Federal politicians must intervene to make sure that the guidelines are reflective of current science and in step with the Ontario government’s policy of screening women ages 40-49.

I had the pleasure of meeting with the Ontario Association of Radiologists to discuss the importance of radiologists to our healthcare system. Radiology is essential to the diagnosis of many diseases such as cancer, stroke, and cardiac conditions.

Early diagnosis saves lives, reduces wait times and relieves pressure off of our healthcare system!
