ā€œHealth is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.ā€ ~ World Health Organisation

I don’t believe in ā€˜fad’ or crash diets. These provide short term solutions with unsustainable results. They are a plan A with no plan B, a ā€œone side fits allā€ or ā€œcookie cutterā€ approach to nutrition. I work with individuals of all capabilities w

ho are searching for personal and supportive 1 to 1 nutrition coaching. The existing nutrition and fitness industry is poorly regulated. There is an abundance of conflicting evidence readily available it’s easy to get lost confused. Using an evidence based approach to education I eliminate dietary myths. I empower my clients on a personal level to help them achieve their fat loss, body recomposition and fitness goals for life!

Did you know only 5-20% of dieters keep the weight off?!!!

It’s not you, who is at fault,

It’s not your lack of discipline, or willpower.

The truth is, most diets fail because they're far too restrictive!

I’m on a mission to change that.

I help women build sustainable habits, stop comfort eating, reclaim motivation, beat fatigue, and lose weight for good - without restriction, hunger or counting calories.

I’m a ā€œNourish Doctorā€ formally referred to as a lifestyle medicine physician.

Yes, I help women lose weight, but I also help them review all aspects of their health and wellbeing to create their most energised, healthy and confident lives.

You see, traditional weight loss approaches are 1 dimensional.

You follow a food plan, add exercise to create a calorie deficit and then you lose weight.

The problem is that this approach is unsustainable.

It’s unrealistic and at least 80% of the time leads to weight regain because it doesn't address their mindset and it’s not personalised enough.

You can have the best meal plan in the world but if you don’t take into account your personal challenges such as long working hours, travelling the world for work or binge eating patterns then it’s not going to work long term!

This is why The Nourish Academy is different.

Nourish is a holistic approach to nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise, emotional wellbeing and relationships.

Because more often than not, our food choices are strongly linked to how we feel, how well we’ve slept and what’s going on in our lives.

For example, when we’re exhausted from a poor nights sleep with high stress levels of looming deadlines we’re much more likely to grab the chocolate bar instead of the nutritious apple!

Yep, you’re not alone. It’s science!

So if any of this intrigues you I have an opportunity to share.

I’m currently enrolling both private and Nourish Academy clients.

But this ISN’T for you if…

šŸ‘€ You want to count calories for the rest of your life

šŸ‘€ You’re unwilling to look at the relationships between stress, sleep deprivation and your food choices

šŸ‘€ You’re not ready to explore what Nourish can offer, instead of a traditional diet approach to weight loss

So if you’re curious to know more, I’m inviting you to apply for a complimentary consultation to see if I might be able to help.

Exercise is rubbish for weight loss and here’s why šŸ‘‡

As a Doctor you’d expect me to encourage exercise, and I do… BUT it’s important that you’re exercising for the right reasons and not just to ā€œburn caloriesā€.

I’ve met many patients over the years who have been exercising in ways they don’t enjoy wasting their precious time and energy trying to shift weight.

The people I support are busy and so my ethos is about helping them get the biggest results in the shortest amount of time.

To help you out, I’m going to break down the science as to why exercise is counterproductive when it comes to weight loss.

1ļøāƒ£ Understanding caloric burn: 1lb of fat is approximately 3,500 calories.

This means to ā€œburnā€ 1lb of fat through exercise alone you’d need to do around 7 hours of high intensity spin each week!

That's a significant time commitment and although I do love my peloton you can count me out.

2ļøāƒ£ Exercise and appetite:
Exercise can increase hunger and lead to compensatory eating.

We often consume more calories than we burn during exercise, making weight loss solely through exercise challenging.

3ļøāƒ£ When to introduce exercise on a weight loss program:
You can achieve weight loss by creating a moderate calorie deficit (approx 20%) through food alone. This means exercise is not needed in the early stages.

In fact, to really emphasise this point, when I’m guiding patients through a weight loss program I usually wait about 4 weeks before introducing or adjusting exercise to emphasise how important healthy eating habits are.

This gives them time to implement habits around their nutrition first instead of adding in too much at once which is often unsustainable.

4ļøāƒ£ Why do you exercise?:
Exercise should be enjoyed and pursued primarily for its health benefits and feel good factor, not just as a weight loss tool.

Choose an activity that contributes positively to your overall well-being so you’re more likely to stick to it and reap the benefits.

HOWEVER, It would be negligent for me to say that exercise doesn’t play a role in weight management because it absolutely does but it’s not because of the ā€œcalories burnedā€.

Considering health psychology and behaviour change, we are more likely to make healthier food choices when we are exercising consistently.

The problem is, most will get started on a new diet and start exercising straight away forcing themselves to follow ā€œthe planā€.

Consistency might happen for the first few weeks or months but eventually it goes out the window… along with the prepared lunches and healthy dinners!

The key takeaway is this: exercise in a way you actually enjoy and do it for the health benefits and feel good factor NOT for weight loss.

By exercising in a way you enjoy, you’re more likely to be consistent, eat well and live a healthier and longer life.

P.S. If you enjoy my science backed, holistic and supportive approach to getting healthy and losing weight you’ll want to know that The Nourish Academy is open for enrollment.

It’s a 12-week small group experience to help 10 women create a healthier lifestyle, reduce stress, maximise their energy, build self confidence and lose weight sustainably without restrictive dieting.

We open the doors 3 times a year, and we’re currently recruiting ladies to begin on June 10th.

The real reasons why diets don’t work for most people…

Women come to me because they want to lose weight, have more energy and feel healthy.

They’ve usually been dieting for years, often decades, losing and regaining the same weight again and again.

Others have tried more extreme approaches such as weight loss injections, meal replacement shakes and even bariatric surgery.

Problem is, it’s not just weight that’s the issue.

There’s usually a background of stress as they navigate busy diaries, board meetings, business travel, family commitments, personal admin and everything in between.

They think they just need more willpower to eat less and exercise more, which makes perfect sense because we need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight.

But the challenge is, actually sticking to the calorie deficit..

My job is to help them understand the source of the extra calories and when we look more closely it’s usually related to a combination of snacking, large portions and alcohol.

After asking more questions I’m able to understand that snacking is usually linked to afternoon sugar slumps, stress, boredom and a desire for comfort.

The portions are large because they’ve often skipped breakfast, grabbed lunch on the go and so they’re starving after work.

Alcohol is often used as a tool to switch off, unwind and celebrate after a hard day in the office which reduces their inhibitions and leads to snacking on even more empty calories.

Logically, it makes perfect sense why sticking to the calorie deficit and losing weight has been so challenging but changing our habits and behaviours so they eat less and lose weight isn’t as straightforward.

This is exactly why according to medical science 80-95% of weight loss attempts fail in the long term!

It’s not because they don’t have enough willpower, it’s because the strategy was too superficial and didn’t consider the whole situation or address the root cause.

Sadly, most diets don’t address each person as an individual and assess their lifestyle. They simply say ā€eat this, don’t eat that and if you follow these rules you’ll winā€

Problem is we don't live in a laboratory. We’re humans. Humans with stressful and demanding jobs, finite energy and feelings.

We use food and alcohol as a tool to switch off from work, ease stress, socialise with friends and family and numb our feelings.

Now let me be clear. I’m not suggesting you give up your favourite malbec, stop snacking or bin all the chocolate in the house.

I too, enjoy a glass (or two) of wine and couldn’t live without chocolate šŸ˜‡

Instead, I’m saying we need a more holistic approach to weight loss which addresses the root cause. One that takes into consideration our lifestyles, thoughts and feelings in combination with nutritional support to create long term behaviour change and sustainable weight loss.

This is exactly why I created The Nourish Academy to help women reprogram their mindset & build healthy habits for sustainable weight loss.

The Nourish Academy is a 12-week small group experience to help 10 women create a healthier lifestyle, reduce stress, maximise their energy, build self confidence and lose weight sustainably without restrictive dieting.

Has the diet industry been feeding you a lie?

Over the last 7 years I’ve met hundreds of women who have spent years, sometimes decades, on and off diets.

Others have forced themselves to follow extreme shake diets, injected themselves with ā€˜weight loss medication’ and some have risked their lives for bariatric surgery.

But despite their best efforts, they lost and regained the same weight again and again.

There’s a common theme I see, which is inhibiting their success….

This theme is the belief that weight loss has to mean self punishment. Whether it’s meticulously counting calories, cutting out their favourite foods, forcing themselves to exercise or tolerating hunger the pattern of restriction is unsustainable.

This often leads to obsessing over food, guilt after eating certain foods, overeating and binge eating.

For these women, keeping weight off feels impossible. They lose and regain the same weight again and again.

That’s why I support women with making realistic lifestyle changes and building healthy habits.

So instead of self punishment, it’s a journey of empowerment, confidence and health optimisation where they learn to:

šŸ’œ Nourish themselves with foods that fuel their bodies, while still enjoying their favourite treats in moderation.

šŸ’œ Exercise in a way they actually enjoy, instead of pounding the treadmill to ā€˜burn calories’.

šŸ’œ Enjoy self care to reduce stress, improve their sleep and calm their busy mind instead of feeling guilty or selfish for taking time for themselves.

It’s not an easy transition to go from traditional restrictive dieting into a holistic health journey.

In fact, it can be quite scary to let go of the rules associated with weight loss. As Helen, one of my former patients so eloquently put it ā€œasking me to eat intuitively is like asking me to trust a cheating boyfriendā€

So we have to start slowly…

This is exactly why I created The Nourish Academy to help women reprogram their mindset & build healthy habits for sustainable weight loss.

The Nourish Academy is a 12-week small group experience to help 10 women create a healthier lifestyle, reduce stress, maximise their energy, build self confidence and lose weight sustainably without restrictive dieting.

From binge eating to losing 9lbs in 4 weeks without giving up meals out, wine or chocolate

Before I met Vikki she had literally tried EVERYTHING…

šŸ‘‰ Every diet under the sun.

šŸ‘‰ Prescribed medications

šŸ‘‰ A gastric band!

But the bingeing remained so even when she lost weight, she couldn’t keep it off.

Why?

Because nobody had helped her to identify the root cause of her overeating.

Nobody had addressed her mindset or behaviours.

The key for Vikki was to heal her relationship with food and teach her how to build healthy and sustainable habits instead of a restrictive or black and white approach to weight loss

Here’s how we did it:

Here’s how we did it:

Step 1: Together we designed a bespoke food plan where Vikki could still enjoy chocolate and ice cream whilst maintaining a calorie deficit so she could still lose weight.

Step 2: She didn't feel like she was missing out and never felt hungry.

Step 3: Next we addressed the bingeing and learned that it tended to happen when she was alone, upset or frustrated. So I helped her to implement new tools and strategies for navigating those challenging emotions.

Step 4: Vikki learned new tools to manage stress, and deal with acute stress in the moment instead of turning to biscuits during the working day.

Step 5: We slowly added in realistic exercise - this was as simple as adding in walking, which we’re slowly building into a more formal method of exercise.

It’s been a complete lifestyle overhaul for Vikki.

A holistic, easy and enjoyable way to lose weight and actually keep it off for good.

But the most important thing is she feels better, she’s healthier, she’s able to chase after her granddaughter and she’s added years to her life.

If you’re looking for support to make sustainable lifestyle changes so you can lose weight whilst improving your wellbeing you’ll want to know about The Nourish Academy

What do you do when Hello! call and ask you to write an article? 😱

Do you…

1. Faint šŸ˜†

2. Scream the house down!

3. Take a deep breath, sit yourself down and write a piece that can really help people

*composes self*

For too long the diet industry has been taking advantage of women and destroying their self esteem.

Leading them to believe that they're at fault for not having enough willpower to stick to their diet plan.

This simply isn’t true.

More than 80% of weight loss attempts fail in the long term and willpower isn’t the issue.

One of the core mistakes I see women make is believing that weight loss means self-punishment.
I’m not surprised, because traditional diets have indoctrinated women into believing they need to restrict themselves by cutting out their favourite treats, forcing themselves to eat rabbit food or tolerating hunger in order to lose weight.
In my work I have the privilege of helping women to understand the pitfalls of the traditional diets so they can stop blaming themselves.

Instead I get to support them in creating sustainable, nourishing and enjoyable ways to build healthy habits so they lose weight and improve their health.

Writing this piece wasn't just a professional milestone; it was an opportunity to set the record straight. To free women from restrictive weight loss approaches and instead support them in fostering self kindness for healthy and sustainable weight loss.

Aaaaaaand then you faint again when it’s published 🤣

I’ve put a link to the article in the comments below.

I hope you enjoy it and I hope it helps.

The women I support are intelligent, successful, professional women.

They know what to do to lose weight, but struggle with consistent implementation over time because often life gets in the way.

Maybe you also…

šŸ‘‰ Start a new diet feeling great, then motivation fades and willpower runs out.

šŸ‘‰ Feel too exhausted from the pressures of work and life commitments to make time for yourself

šŸ‘‰ Feel nervous about handling social commitments while losing weight

You’re not alone in this. Sadly, I hear this all the time.

And it makes perfect sense because we’ve been conditioned by the diet culture to rely on willpower in order to lose weight and keep it off.

As women, we’re hard wired to meet the needs of others before our own.

And I’m willing to bet you’ve been derailed during a social event in the past and completely thrown the towel in. All because diets don’t teach us how to manage social events without feeling restricted and missing out!

But what if I told you that you can succeed at weight loss…

✨ Without relying on willpower to eat healthy and workout.

✨ Whilst increasing your energy and creating more time for yourself without guilt

✨ While looking forward to social commitments and enjoying them with ease

This is exactly what The Nourish Method is about.

At Nourish we support women with creating consistent motivation, increasing their energy, prioritising their needs without guilt, socialising with ease, healing their relationship with food all while losing weight consistently and easily.

If you’re looking for support to lose weight sustainably whilst improving your wellbeing I’m opening up availability for 2 new ladies to start in April.

For more information, drop me a private message to express your interest and we can arrange a chat to see if this might be a good fit for you.

08/03/2024

I’m sure your feed will be flooded with posts for International Women's Day so I wanted to share something different with you.

Something real, raw & authentic. It’s straight from the heart.

It’s a letter to my little girl, my 12 year old self.

May it inspire you to write your own, take your own leaps and embark on your own journey of personal and professional growth.

ā€œDear 12 year old Aileen,

I see you struggling with acne, anxiety, and low mood. I know it feels overwhelming, but these struggles don't define you. Your worth isn't in your appearance; it's in your kindness, empathy, and strength.

Self harm isn’t the answer. I promise there are brighter days ahead. As you grow older you’ll embark on a life changing journey, one that will shape you into the incredible woman you're meant to become.

I know it feels like a distant dream but YES, you'll attend medical school!

It's going to be tough, demanding countless hours of studying and dedication but you'll persevere because of your passion for healing and helping others.

Qualifying as a doctor will fill you with pride, but you'll realise traditional medicine isn't your path.

Your journey doesn't end there. Fueled by a desire to make a real difference, you'll start your own business dedicated to helping women with weight issues, emotional eating, stress, sleep, and unhealthy habits.

Through your business, you'll become a beacon of hope, offering guidance, support, and encouragement to those in need. You'll create a safe space where women can come together, share their stories, and start their own journey of self-discovery and transformation.

I won't sugarcoat it; the road ahead won't be easy.

There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But with each obstacle you overcome, you'll emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient than ever before.

Today is International Women's Day! And I’m writing to you to celebrate the power of women supporting women.

Your story isn’t just about your triumphs; it's a testament to the strength and resilience that ALL women possess. One day you’ll share your story on a TEDx stage to inspire and instigate hope for others. I know you’ve no idea what TEDx means yet but trust me, it’s huge!

So, Aileen, I urge you to hold onto hope.

Believe in yourself, even when the world seems to doubt you.

Surround yourself with people who truly love and care for you even when you can't do that for yourself.

You are destined for greatness.

You are capable of achieving things beyond your wildest dreams.

Keep pushing forward. The best is yet to come.

With all my love,
33 year old Aileen xā€

May this letter inspire you to be kinder to yourself and take the next step on your journey.

With love, always,
Dr Aileen x
