April marks Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Awareness Month, highlighting a common condition that affects approximately 1 in 5 people in the UK at some point in their lives.
IBS is characterised by abdominal pain and disruptions in bowel habits, such as diarrhoea or constipation, as well as pain, discomfort and or bloating in the abdomen.
Symptoms of IBS vary from person to person, with some experiencing mild discomfort while others face more severe symptoms that significantly impact daily life.
In this short video, Dr Malcolm Smith, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Albyn Hospital, discusses diagnostic tests, management strategies, and treatment options for IBS.

Dan Biggar Announcement
We are delighted to share that Dan Biggar, Welsh international rugby union player and fly-half for Toulon, has signed as our first Executive Coach and Leadership Ambassador.
Dan brings with him a wealth of experience leading rugby teams at domestic and international level. His role will support a transformation in the way Circle approaches the development of it’s leaders, with Dan playing a pivotal role guiding, supporting and coaching leaders from hospital to board level.
The new role, the first of its kind for Circle Health Group, will focus on developing leaders at every level of the organisation. From team leaders on wards or in theatres, through to hospital directors and the board, Circle’s vision is to bring in key individuals who have achieved excellence in their field. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the digestive system, with up to one third of the UK population experiencing symptoms. Women tend to be slightly more affected by this condition than men.
IBS may present itself differently in ech individual, where symptoms can include:
- abdominal pain and cramping, which may be relieved by moving your bowels.
- a change in your bowel habits - such as diarrhoea, constipation or sometimes both.
- bloating and swelling of the stomach.
- excessive wind (flatulence)
- occasionally experiencing an urgent need to move your bowels.
These symptoms can vary from mild to servere, can come and go over time and can often last weeks or months at a time. Its’ often a lifelong condition that affects one's quality of life.
