World Glaucoma Week 2025

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, but with early detection and proper management, further vision loss can often be prevented.

According to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, approximately 700,000 people in the UK are affected by glaucoma, yet half remain undiagnosed.

While glaucoma is rare in people under 40, the risk increases with age. By the age of 75, one in 10 people are affected. Because glaucoma can develop without noticeable symptoms, significant peripheral vision loss can occur before a person realises it, as the brain compensates for missing visual information.

Glaucoma is usually first detected during a routine eye test, highlighting the importance of regular check-ups.

Mr Sudipto Bhatta, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, at Albyn Hospital, states: “My simple recommendation is to attend one’s optician for regular yearly sight tests after the age of 45 years. The optician can spot elevated eye pressure and refer patients to a consultant ophthalmologist, where more specialised tests are carried out, including a thorough clinical examination to confirm the diagnosis”

Albyn’s Chloe takes the stage for Friends of ANCHOR - Courage on the Catwalk 2025 on May 10th and 11th.

Chloe's Story

"My family and friends nominated me to be a model for Friends of Anchor Courage on the Catwalk 2025, and I’m absolutely honoured to have been chosen and also to be the youngest model. This opportunity means so much to me, as it allows me to raise awareness about blood cancer in younger people.

I've been very open about my journey with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma and I’m grateful for the chance to share my story and importantly to give back to the organisation that supported me when I needed it most.

My goal is to raise £250 to ensure that Friends of ANCHOR can continue their vital work in supporting others facing similar challenges. Your contribution will help provide essential services and create a welcoming environment for those in a similar situation. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of many.

In November 2022, I noticed a lump on my neck. Concerned, I visited my GP four times before they finally took me seriously and referred me to ARI at the end of January 2023.

By February, I had my first fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy—one of seven in total. Then, in March 2023, I received the life-changing diagnosis: stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I had a 12cm tumour on my neck, along with cancerous nodes on my collarbone and under my armpit. I was only 21.

I faced one of the most challenging moments of my life then. It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, and I often felt incredibly alone.

Before starting treatment, I made the decision to freeze my eggs, successfully preserving 15 in total. On May 3rd, I began the RADAR trial, which tested whether the antibody drug Brentuximab Vedotin, combined with chemotherapy, would be more effective. After just four sessions, it seemed to be working - I rang the bell in July 2023.

However, my relief was short-lived. Soon after, I found out the cancer had spread to the other side of my neck. I underwent two more chemotherapy sessions in September, but my team and I decided to pause treatment for another biopsy, which, thankfully, came back benign.

On December 27th, 2023, I officially entered my five-year remission. Though I continue to monitor my benign area closely, I’m incredibly grateful to be where I am today.

This journey hasn’t been without its challenges. I still experience migraines, fatigue, and neuropathy in my feet and hands from chemotherapy - but I’m here, moving forward, and embracing life with the incredible family and friends who stood by me every step of the way. I couldn’t have done it without them—thank you from the bottom of my heart.

A huge thank you also to the amazing staff and volunteers at Friends of ANCHOR, who became my guiding light throughout this experience. Their unwavering support truly made all the difference".

Osteoarthritis is a common debilitating condition that can impact daily life. It is estimated that around 10% of people over the age of 45 years in Scotland have osteoarthritis of the hip.

Osteoarthritis is the most common of arthritis in the UK and it causes joints to become painful and stiff. Other symptoms include difficulty in moving the joint, swelling and tenderness and or grating or crackling sounds when moving.

Mr Rajkumar Thangaraj, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at our Inverness Outpatient Centre, explains how hip replacement surgery can relieve pain and restore mobility. Some patients can recover in six weeks and can even return to driving.

Albyn Hospital is thrilled to announce that Charlie House HQ has been chosen as the hospital's Charity of the Year by staff.

Every year, our staff nominate a charity close to their hearts and cast their votes to select our Charity of the Year. This time, Charlie House was the clear winner! We are incredibly proud to support their amazing work.

Charlie House was founded in 2011 with the goal of improving the quality of life for babies, children and young people in the North-east of Scotland who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and to provide support for them and their families.

To kick off our fundraising efforts, we will be participating in Run Balmoral this April, with 40 of our staff and consultants taking on the 5K or 10K races. There will be more fundraising events planned for the rest of the year in support of Charlie House.
