While our hearts are broken by the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, today we celebrate one of the world's most courageous and inspiring women.

Our Queen lived a life in service. She guided the British people through decades of change with dignity, kindness and stoicism.

She was our constant.

A first date may feel tough and nerves can get in the way. So following on from our previous post, we have put together additional tips and suggestions to help alleviate those first date nerves!

Be honest
Being as authentic as you can will help lay strong foundations for a lasting relationship.

Body Language
Body language is intimately tied to how others perceive you and their first impressions of you. How you hold yourself, your posture and your facial expressions are cues others will look at to appraise what type of person you are and whether you are approachable and likeable. Be aware of your expressions, tone of voice and gestures. Do you make eye contact throughout a conversation, indicating interest? Or do you keep your arms folded in front of you, forming a barrier? Remember that non-verbal communication is just as important as the words you use. Make a conscious effort to focus on the positive and the things that you are grateful for. It will make you a happier person and a better date.

Put your smart phone away
You cannot forge a genuine connection when you’re multi-tasking and non-verbal communication such as subtle expressions, gestures and other visual cues can be easily missed when you’re not tuned in. Checking your phone or scanning the room to see who to talk to next is rude and dismissive and shows that you don’t really care about what the other person is saying. Make eye contact. Ask questions. Focus on getting to know the other person, even if you only have limited time to talk.

Be Positive
People with a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards life are more attractive and even though things may go wrong, they do not usually let them ruin their day. Some people however, have developed the habit of complaining and will complain about everything from the traffic to the service to the food. They may not even be aware that they are doing it. If you find yourself complaining a lot, make a conscious effort to focus on the positive and the things that you are grateful for.

Good Manners
Make a habit of having good manners in all the various aspects of dating. This means replying to correspondence or thanking someone for a date even if you don’t want to see them again. If you have made the decision to not take it any further, let them know and wish them all the best for their dating journey.

But remember; don’t put too much importance on one date with someone. Over-thinking things or letting your imagination run away with you is never going to be helpful. If the date doesn’t go well, don’t stop and replay it in your head. If in doubt after a first date, go on a second date. A first date may feel tough and nerves can get in the way. At a second date, you can relax and get to know each other better and this may help you decide whether to take it further.

We hope our dating tips have been helpful. Above all else, relax and enjoy yourself. If you don’t find romance, you may find a friendship. If neither, you have gained dating experience and will be prepared for your next first date!

The Date!

It’s normal to feel nervous on a first date particularly if you haven’t been dating for a while.

Over the next few posts, we have put together some tips and suggestions on how to help you relax if you are dipping your toe back into the dating pool. Please also remember … it is only a date! You are not signing your life away to someone!

Dress Appropriately
Do dress up and make an effort. It shows a courtesy and appreciation of the person you are meeting. We are not saying you need to dress up to the nines, but it is common sense to look clean and presentable on dates. Leave football shirts, trainers, scruffy jeans and dirty clothes in the wardrobe, along with that cliche ‘they’ll have to love me for what I am!”. So do dress smartly, but also in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Prepare
If you are feeling nervous, it is more than likely that they are feeling nervous too! Remember to focus your attention outward; not inward. To combat first-date nerves, focus your attention on what your date is saying and doing and what is going on around you, rather than on your internal thoughts. Staying fully present in the moment will help take your mind off worries and insecurities.

Be Curious
The goal isn’t to have a list of questions you can pull out and recite. The idea is that a little prep work will help you feel confident and relaxed so you can have a fluid conversation. When you are truly curious about someone’s thoughts, feelings and opinions, it shows. However, remember to keep the conversation light. Avoid politics, previous relationships and refrain from any complaints and comments on how your life might be better. When you are smiling and having a good time, you are much more attractive to others than when you are venting!

Don’t use dates as therapy
Finding yourself in a relaxed environment with someone who seems caring, gentle and kind can prompt the floodgates to open for some people. But this leads to the other person feeling more like a counsellor than a potential partner and could stop things from developing further. Try and keep things light.

Pay attention
Make an effort to truly listen to the other person. Little things can go a long way such as remembering someone’s preferences and what is going on in their life.

So, you’ve got this far – to the first date! You both want to be there and are both looking for a connection. Relax and have fun!
