Thanks to the fine weather we're now into pollen season. Tree pollen levels are high at the moment, but grass pollen levels will soon start to rise as well. Virtually all the range of drugs we use to treat hay fever (antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops) are available to purchase from the pharmacy without prescription, so you don't need to see a doctor to get hold of these. More information about hay fever can be found by clicking here:

If you are planning on travelling abroad this summer please check you have a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) card. The card lets you get necessary state healthcare in the European Economic Area (EEA), and some other countries, on the same basis as a resident of that country. This may be free or it may require a payment equivalent to that which a local resident would pay. It's free and you can apply for it using the attached link.

It is NOT a replacement for adequate travel insurance which you still ought to have in place.

As foretold last week we are now taking bookings for the Spring COVID booster vaccination. This is for a smaller group of patients than the winter campaign (Immunocompromised and over 75s). If you are in one of the eligible groups please contact us as slots are now available to book.

Just a reminder that for several years we have been offering later, after 6:30pm, appointments on a Monday and Tuesday through the surgery. Additional appointments are also available on a Wednesday, Friday and alternate Saturdays run by our local GP Federation on behalf of the Arden Primary Care Network. These appointment, including the Saturday morning session are available to be booked by our patients by speaking to our receptionists.

Advanced warning that we'll soon be contacting some of you (age over 75, immunocompromised and care home residents) about the COVID Spring vaccination booster. Please note this is a smaller group of the most at risk patients than the autumn winter program. Further details to follow.

Whilst out thoughts are on infectious disease we thought you might like to see what happened with COVID and Flu infections over the winter. As you can see COVID still hasn't settled into a pattern. Flu peaked around Christmas this year and whilst not as high as a couple of years ago levels were up on some previous years.

For parents of children under the age of 5 there's a NHS website with a range of resources you might find useful:

90% of your child's brain growth happens before the age of 5. Right from the start, all those little moments you spend together are building their brain.

Just another note about the NHS app. You can also use it to book appointments with the doctors. We have to list the appointments as 'telephone' or face to face' on the clinical system- it's the way it works unfortunately. It can sometimes look like there's only appointments of one type available on the day you want to see us, however if you feel you need to be seen face to face (if we need to examine you for instance), and there's only 'phone appointments left, you can contact reception and these can be changed into the required appointment type.

If you haven't already downloaded it, just a reminder about the NHS App. Most of our prescription requests now come through online and this is the quickest and easiest way to order your tablets. You can use the prescription request to add messages, such as asking for additional quantities to cover holidays. However we can't easily respond to these messages so if you have a clinical query either book an appointment or submit a request by using the 'Online Triage' function on our website:

It's Valentine's Day this month so the information board in reception is currently displaying loads of information about heart disease. If you haven't had your blood pressure checked recently or have missed an invitation for a NHS Health Check (age 40-74 with no pre-existing health condition), please get in touch if you would like to have these done.

27/01/2025

It looks like we're back online again (for the moment) so hopefully if it stays like this our 'phones should be OK now. Apologies for any inconvenience getting through to us, however it was out of our control.

27/01/2025

There's a major NHS Internet outage this morning affecting GP practices and hospitals. It's taken out our phone system amongst other issues, so you won't be able to get through on the phones. We are here and surgeries are still running so please turn up as normal. We don't know how long this situation will last for.

This month's notice board theme is all to do with cervical smears. These are offered to women between the ages of 25 and 64 and the aim is to pick up pre-cancerous changes before cervical cancer actually develops. Currently only around 80% of our patients are up to date with the test, so if you think you are overdue, please contact reception to book this with our nurses.

As you may have seen on the news, the level of Flu infection this year is getting quite high. The graph shows the levels of hospital infection over the last few years (except for 2020-2022 when social distancing for COVID reasons meant there was very little around). The current year is the darker black line. Flu can be a very serious illness and whilst most eligible patients have had their jab, if you haven't and would like to have it, we still have a small supply of vaccine available. Please contact reception to book with the nursing team.
