St John Ambulance Cymru has joined organisations across Wales in signing a charter agreeing to respond to public tragedies with openness, transparency and accountability.

The Charter for Families Bereaved by Public Tragedy, which calls for a cultural shift in public bodies' engagement with bereaved families, ensuring the lessons of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath are learned to prevent those who are affected by public tragedy in the future from having the same experience. It is with great sadness that we have learned this weekend of the death of David Hugh Thomas CBE GCStJ LLD DL, former Prior for Wales.

Our thoughts at this time are with his family and friends.

The flags at HQ will be lowered and remain at half mast until after his funeral.

Our Assistant Chief Commissioner Beth Francis, who is also Paramedic, said: "Studies show that women are far less likely to receive bystander CPR, often due to fears of causing harm or social discomfort.

“We must break this barrier by educating the public, challenging misconceptions, and reinforcing that CPR is a life-saving skill that should be applied without hesitation—regardless of gender.

“At St John Ambulance Cymru, we are committed to equipping people with the confidence to act in an emergency because every second counts, and every life matters."

CPR and defibrillation can more than double survival chances. But only if they’re accessible when needed.
