Following the storm over the weekend, our Customer Experience team has been receiving a lot of phone calls, emails, website inquiries, and messages on social media. Our team is working hard to respond to everyone as quickly as possible.

To help us keep up with the high demand, tomorrow (Wednesday, 11th December), we’ll be transferring our phone lines to our out-of-hours service. Please only call if it’s an emergency, so our team can focus on responding to all the emails, website, and social media messages.

On 3rd September 2024 we announced our decision to close Arthur Jenkins Care Home in Blaenavon. This decision was made due to the building being no longer suitable to deliver the quality of care we aspire to. At this stage Torfaen County Borough Council (TCBC), residents, residents’ families and colleagues were advised that the service will close on the 6th of December 2024.

Since the announcement, Hafod have been working alongside TCBC on two streams of work. Firstly, we have been supporting efforts to secure the future of Arthur Jenkins as a Care Home with another supplier, and secondly, we have been working through a home closure plan to secure new homes for our residents.

To support the efforts to secure a future for Arthur Jenkins, we were approached by TCBC to extend the closure date to enable time for this option to be explored by a third party. We agreed ‘in principle’ to this request whilst working through the impact this would have on our residents, resident's families, colleagues and Hafod.

Hafod did not communicate this as a definite way forward but are aware that this option did become known in the local community. Over the last week, we have been working tirelessly towards delivering on the ‘in principle’ agreement.

However, it has become evident that extending the closure notice is having a detrimental impact on the wellbeing of our residents and colleagues due to the uncertainty of the future of the home. This was discussed and recognised by both Hafod and TCBC during meetings which have taken place over the last week.

It has always been the number one objective of Hafod and TCBC during the closure process to maintain the wellbeing of residents and colleagues, and as this is being negatively impacted, we feel it is in the best interests of our residents not to extend the closure of the service.

This means that the closure of the service will continue, and it will close on the 6th of December as originally communicated. We will continue working with TCBC and social services to further discuss with residents and their families their preferences for a new home. We are pleased that many residents would like to remain with Hafod, and we will secure places for them in our homes. For the remaining residents we will work with them and their families to find a suitable new home which meets their needs.

We will continue to support any third party who is interested in taking over the service. Unfortunately, it is not Hafod’s sole decision on who the lease can be transferred to or whether a new care operator can register to operate the service, but we will continue to support the process where we can.

This update has already been shared directly with those affected, and we will continue to work alongside our colleagues, as well as our residents and their relatives to ensure we provide the support they need.

As we move forward, we will continue to work alongside TCBC and will further discuss with residents and their relatives about their preferences for a new home.
We are also working closely with our colleagues at Arthur Jenkins Care Home to provide them with the support they need during this time, including finding them employment within Hafod, if this is something they would like to do.

Company Announcement: Arthur Jenkins Care Home, Blaenavon

We have reluctantly made the decision to close our Arthur Jenkins Care Home in Blaenavon. Whilst we are proud of the quality of care that our team at Arthur Jenkins provides for our residents, it has become clear that the building is not suitable to deliver the quality of care we aspire to.

The closure of Arthur Jenkins has been under discussion with the local authority for several years. Torfaen County Borough Council, who own the site and are working closely in partnership with us, support this decision.

Despite increased investment to the building over our time as operator, an independent review carried out has concluded that even substantial works in the building would not address significant shortcomings. Although we considered various options with regards to further investment, due to a number of challenges with this particular site Arthur Jenkins is not able to provide the facilities we, and our customers, expect in the long term.

We are supporting both our residents and colleagues to ensure their well-being and achieve the best possible outcomes for their individual needs. We aim to minimise any colleagues at risk of redundancy by offering redeployment to our other Hafod services.

We are taking every precaution in supporting our residents into their new homes. All moves will be carried out in a safe and sensitive manner in consultation with our residents’ case workers, families and advocates, the transferee home and medical advice.
We continue to ensure our Arthur Jenkins residents receive the highest quality of care and support.
