📚✨Spreading Kindness on World Book Day! ✨📚

The Doves Funeral Directors, Swanley team marked World Book Day by giving back to the community. Funeral Arranger Rose Fairweather donated books to her local nursery, where they were warmly received.

Books play such an important role in a child’s life, and small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

**Funeral Partners Completes First Acquisition in Cornwall**

Funeral Partners are pleased to announce that last month we completed our first acquisition in Cornwall, opening a new geographical area for further expansion in the future.

Based in St Austell, Personal Choice Funeral Directors was established in 2012 and with two additional branches close by, they have an excellent reputation for serving the local community.

The former owners will now enjoy a well-earned retirement, and the business will continue to be run by Stephen and Pat Jones and the rest of the team.

We would like to officially welcome the whole team to Funeral Partners.

A Welcome Return to Where it All Began for James Ray

We’re excited to share that James Ray, an experienced and respected Funeral Director, has returned to his roots in the South West following a recent promotion to Regional Director for Southern England, Wales, and North London at Funeral Partners. 🌟

James began his career in 2000 at a local Funeral Directors in Teignmouth before joining Drakes of Torbay in 2003, where he quickly became a trusted name in the community, supporting families during their most difficult times.

James’s journey then took him to Surrey, where he successfully grew a portfolio of funeral businesses, specialising in serving diverse communities, including Muslim, Italian, and Nepalese funerals.

His role eventually expanded into Berkshire and North London, but now he’s back in Devon, overseeing our exceptional network that includes Drakes, Torbay & District Funeral Directors and JH Way Funeral Services.

James said: “It is wonderful to see so many familiar faces, within the teams in Torbay and from Teignmouth, like Caz Denning who also brings 23 years of service and dedication to the industry.

“I originally got into the industry after seeing a role advertised, but someone told me the job wouldn’t suit me. I’ve always had a desire to prove people wrong and have since found that helping people when they are at a low ebb is the most rewarding experience you can have.”

The funeral business is a fixture in James’ family with his wife Paula working as a Regional Support Manager and eldest son Callum enjoying his role as a Funeral Manager in Berkshire and Oxfordshire. His youngest son Ben is studying at university in Dundee.

"I am excited to return to Devon and continue my journey with Funeral Partners. I look forward to working with our dedicated team to support families during their most challenging times.”

Matthew Barber, Chief Operating Officer at Funeral Partners said: "We are thrilled to welcome James back to Devon, and are excited that he agreed to lead the way in our largest region.

“His extensive experience and dedication to providing compassionate and personalised funeral services make him an invaluable addition to our team."

Please join us in congratulating James on this exciting new chapter of his career with Funeral Partners!

Day of Reflection 2025 – Remembering Together

This year’s Day of Reflection marks five years since the COVID-19 pandemic began—a time of loss, resilience, and incredible kindness. It is a moment to come together to remember those who lost their lives, honour the tireless efforts of key workers, and reflect on the strength of our communities.

There are many ways you can take part:
🌿 Create a mini memorial to place in your window as a tribute.
🕯️ Light a candle in memory of someone dear.
🤍 Hold a moment of silent reflection for others.
📸 Share memories, photos, or personal reflections to keep their legacy alive.

However you choose to reflect, today is about unity remembrance, gratitude, and hope.

📚✨ Supporting Guisborough Library on World Book Day! ✨📚

In celebration of World Book Day 2025, W Storey Funeral Service made a generous £200 donation to Guisborough Library to support activities for young readers in the community. Funeral Arranger Francesca Capaldi visited the library to present the cheque to Sarah and Laura, who expressed their gratitude for the contribution.

With no council funding received this year for youth activities, this donation will help ensure that young people remain engaged with the library and its valuable resources.

A fantastic way to give back and support the love of reading! 💜📖

🏆🥞 Hemming & Peace Shine at Alcester’s Annual Pancake Races! 🥞🏆

Hemming & Peace were proud to be the main sponsor of this year’s annual pancake races on Alcester High Street! The team fully embraced the fun by entering the workplace relay, where three determined team members took on the challenge of running the length of the High Street—frying pans in hand and pancakes flipping at every marker.

The race got off to a dramatic start when Dominic, the first runner, took an unfortunate tumble. However, he handled it like a true champion, even earning a feature on Midlands Today! Matt powered through on the second leg, and a valiant final sprint brought the team across the finish line in second place—regardless of how many teams actually made it to the start! 😉

It was a fantastic day filled with community spirit, laughter, and great support from the crowd. The suited-and-booted H&P team definitely made an impression, enjoying the chance to connect with the wonderful people of Alcester.
A huge thank you to everyone who cheered us on—see you next year for another flipping great race! 🎉

Left to right: Wendy Blyth (FD – and H&P photographer!), Tracey Parkes (High Bailiff of Alcester Court Leet – the Leet organise the event), Dominic Bartlett-Adams (new FSO of 1 week, throwing himself in before he got full uniform and before the fall that ripped his trousers!), Matt Chapman (FSO and star team-mate), Nigel Peace (Business Principal and last leg runner).

Honouring a Life’s Final Journey

A funeral procession is more than just a route—it’s a meaningful farewell, a moment for reflection, and a way to honour a loved one’s life. As the hearse leads the way to their final resting place, close family and friends follow, often passing by places that held special significance.

When planning a funeral procession, consider:
- How many vehicles will be needed?
- Would you prefer a traditional or specialist funeral vehicle, like a horse-drawn carriage?
- Who will travel in the cortège?
- What route would be most meaningful?
- Would you like a floral tribute in the hearse?

Every journey is unique, just like the life it honours. 💜

Celebrating Jamie Groves and Charlotte Styles for Their Incredible Contribution to GOSH Charity!

We’re proud to share that Jamie Groves, Regional Development Director and his friend Charlotte Styles have been honoured with The Care Award at the inaugural Together For Childhood Awards by Great Ormond Street Hospital and Charity (GOSH Charity).

Jamie and Charlotte are the driving force behind Goals 4 GOSH – an annual football match featuring former Premier League stars, influencers, and celebrities, raising vital funds for the hospital.

Speaking after winning The Care Award, Jamie said: “To be honest, I didn’t realise there were even awards going on.

“Getting chosen, as the winner was a bit mind-blowing.

“Every single penny makes such a difference when it comes to the hospital’s equipment, beds and everything else.

“They rely so much on the funding that the charity provides.

“So, it is a massive thanks to every single player, volunteer, supporter and everybody involved.”

Jamie and Charlotte both have personal connections to Great Ormond Street, and Charlotte said she thought Jamie was ‘bonkers’ when he suggested the first Goals 4 GOSH match in 2021, with just six weeks to prepare.

She added: “It’s incredible to have won the awards, and it’s such a lovely thing to receive.”

As well as the annual match – which is due to return in May and will once again be supported by Funeral Partners and their funeral plan company Choice– Goals 4 GOSH regularly sends teams to support other fundraisers and run other smaller events to support the charity. Jamie himself also completed several physical challenges to raise sponsorship money.

A huge congratulations to Jamie and Charlotte for their hard work, passion, and incredible contributions to such a worthy cause! 💜

A National Grief Awareness Campaign aptly named “Listen ‘Ear” has launched and is already helping those in need of support.

Campaign Organiser Tracey Beavis has been helping bereaved individuals by offering peer support in a non-judgmental, safe space to talk, laugh, cry, and feel less isolated.

The weekly ‘Life after Loss’ cafe in Conisbrough have been particularly beneficial to families looked after by Turners Funeral Service in the town.

Turners Funeral Service’s Funeral Manager, Leanne Rookledge, expressed her pride in supporting the campaign. “The meetings in Conisbrough have already helped several of our families directly, even in the short spell of time it’s been operating.

It’s a welcoming, safe place where people feel they can open up and speak about the things in life that they find difficult following bereavement, regardless of how long ago or recent their loss was.

It’s a real asset to our community and enables us to better signpost families to local aftercare once the funeral arrangements are complete.”

A special heart with ears pin badge has also been created to raise awareness and funds for the Life After Loss Grief Cafes in Conisbrough and nearby Tickhill.

✨ Making a Funeral Personal & Meaningful ✨

Losing a loved one is never easy, but a funeral can be more than a time of mourning—it can be a beautiful celebration of life. While traditional services remain popular, many are choosing unique ways to honour their loved ones.

Personalised Flower Displays – Flowers can represent hobbies, passions, or personality. From specific colours to shaped or lettered arrangements, they can bring a personal touch to the service.

Custom Coffin Designs – Coffins don’t have to be plain. Personalised designs, from meaningful images to intricate artwork, can truly reflect a loved one’s life. Even the interior can be customised to complement the exterior, making the farewell even more special.

A personalised funeral is a way to honour a loved one in a way that truly reflects who they were.

As more people become aware of their environmental impact, funeral providers are adapting to offer greener options. While there’s no standard definition of a green or eco funeral, every choice made—from burial to transport—affects sustainability.

Depending on your preferences and environmental concerns, there are various choices you can make to personalise your funeral while reducing its environmental impact. Here are some options:

🌿 Biodegradable coffins – promote natural decomposition.
🌿 No headstone or permanent memorial – keeps burial sites natural.
🌿 Avoid embalming – reduces chemical use in the environment.
🌿 Minimal vehicles – carpooling lowers carbon emissions.
🌿 Carbon offsetting – balance the footprint by supporting environmental projects.

🌟 Spreading Kindness, One Book at a Time! 📚✨

For Random Act of Kindness Day, Francesca, Aimee, and Anthony from W Storey, Guisborough placed 20 beautifully wrapped children's books around their local community for people to find!

Each book was tied with a ribbon and a gold star that read, "Wishing you a Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day." 🌟 A small gesture with a big impact!

A huge shoutout to this amazing team for making their community a little kinder, one book at a time.

A Celebration of Life is a unique way to honour a loved one who has passed, bringing family and friends together to share positive memories and celebrate their legacy.

This upbeat alternative to a traditional funeral shifts the focus from sorrow to joy, offering mourners a chance to reflect on the happiness, love, and laughter the person brought into their lives.

It's not only a meaningful tribute, but also an important step in the grieving process for many, creating space for healing.

Here are 7 unique ways to celebrate their life:

✨ Plant a memorial tree
✨ Host a campfire gathering
✨ Create a quote board
✨ Host an open mic/karaoke night
✨ Take a painting or pottery class
✨ Host a BBQ or dinner party
✨ Celebrate with live music

A special way to cherish their memory and find comfort in shared moments.

So another week draws to a close. Many of us have things planned for the weekend, maybe watching the football, going to the pub and having a beer or a glass of wine, going to see our dads on Sunday.
Whatever you are doing, stay safe and just remember Father’s Day can be a tough time for many, especially if their dad is no longer with them.
So Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful Fathers, Stepfathers and Grandfathers out there. To those still with us and those who will forever be in our hearts.
