After an overnight fast, insulin levels are low, and glycogen (stored carbohydrate) is partially depleted. In this state, the body is more likely to tap into fat stores for energy during low to moderate-intensity exercise.

From a biological perspective, we have evidence that this is true. However, utilising fat for energy processes is NOT the same as reducing body fat.

A study in 2014 directly compared fat loss between individuals performing fasted and fed cardio. After four weeks, both groups lost similar amounts of fat when their calorie intake and exercise volume were controlled. This suggests that fasted cardio isn’t inherently superior for fat loss when calories are matched.

So, it isn’t entirely clear whether fasted cardio results in extra fat loss in the long run. There are, however, a few extra concerns with fasted cardio:

One potential downside of fasted cardio is the increased risk of muscle breakdown. With low glycogen levels, the body may turn to amino acids (from muscle tissue) for energy, particularly during prolonged or high-intensity exercise.

It might also have a direct impact on performance during your workouts. Training in a low-energy state can lead to decreased endurance, lower power output, and quicker onset of fatigue.

On the other hand, some people find fasted cardio more convenient and feel more focused when exercising without food, so personal preference plays a role.

Meet Sam. ALM’s rising star and all round great guy!!

Sam’s journey into coaching began with a deep passion for helping people shift their mindset around health and fitness. For him, seeing people unlock positive changes in themselves and getting life changing results is what drives him every single day.

What Sam loves most about being a coach at ALM is the incredible community - the members. The support, friendships, and dedication they show one another create an atmosphere that’s unlike anywhere else. He’s equally inspired by the ALM coaching team - being part of a group of like-minded individuals all working towards one goal: helping others live their best lives.

Even though ALM is his first coaching role, Sam’s dedication to learning and growing is second to none. He’s constantly leveling up, putting in the time to improve his skills, and pushing himself to be the best coach he can be. Meet Ruth! Our little ray of sunshine and positivity.

Ruth started her own health & fitness journey over nine years ago, going from someone who hated exercise to someone who couldn’t imagine life without it. Seeing how fitness transformed her body, confidence, and mindset sparked a passion to help others experience the same.

She joined the ALM coaching team nearly 2 years ago and just loves how we do things differently to other fitness businesses. It means that our members have the support they need to get the results they want.

For her, being a coach isn’t just about exercise - it’s about real support, real guidance and being able to help every single person by making them feel seen, heard and valued.

As well as being a role model mummy to her two boys, Ruth comes into her own by specialising in women’s health, from pre & post natal to menopause and pelvic floor. She believes every woman deserves to feel strong, empowered and in control of her body at every stage of life.

Her goal and philosophy inside ALM is to help our member push past their limits, break down barriers, and realise they are capable of so much more than they ever believed. Meet Lisa. From ALM Member to a superstar Coach!

Lisa’s journey with ALM started back in 2018 - not as a coach, but as a member looking for something that finally clicked. After years of trying different gyms and fitness groups that never stuck, she found ALM, became part of our fitness family, and never looked back. It was a total game changer.

From the moment she walked through the ALM doors, she was hooked. She didn’t just build a love for exercise and get amazing results - she built the confidence to take it further, gaining her coaching qualifications, become an ALM coach and dedicated her time to showing others that age is just a number. She’s an absolute inspiration, and proof that it’s never too late to start, to grow, and to achieve! And she still trains alongside everyone, leading by example every step of the way…

Ever wondered why getting back into shape after a long break feels easier than starting from scratch? That’s thanks to muscle memory.

Muscle memory operates on two levels: neurological and muscular. On the neurological side, your brain and nervous system adapt to movements by improving coordination and motor patterns. The more you practice a movement (like squats or deadlifts), the more efficient these neural pathways become.

On the muscular side, research shows that when muscles grow in response to resistance training, they not only increase in size but also in the number of myonuclei (the control centres in muscle cells). A study published in 2010 (Bruusgaard et al.) found that when muscles grow, they add new myonuclei, and even if the muscle shrinks during periods of inactivity, these myonuclei remain.

As a result, after a training break, strength typically returns faster than it initially took to build. A study in Frontiers in Physiology (Snijders et al., 2020) found that individuals who resumed training after a 12-week break regained muscle size and strength more quickly than those starting fresh.

Muscle memory isn't exclusive to younger individuals. Older adults can also benefit. Studies suggest that once muscle is built, the myonuclei gained during training lasts into older age. In a 2013 study (Ogasawara et al.), older adults who had previously engaged in resistance training experienced faster muscle regrowth compared to those without prior training.

Recent research has shown a variety of cognitive and general health benefits of taking creatine that extend far beyond muscle growth. This is why you should consider taking creatine even if you’re not a bodybuilder.

Brain Energy and Cognitive Performance 🧠

Creatine isn't just stored in muscles; it's also stored in the brain. The brain uses a lot of energy, and creatine helps supply that energy by recycling ATP, the body’s primary energy currency.

Studies have shown that creatine supplementation can improve cognitive performance, particularly under sleep deprivation conditions where cognition is impaired.

For example, a study published in Psychopharmacology (2003) found that participants who were supplemented with creatine performed better on memory and intelligence tasks compared to those who didn't. These effects may be even greater during sleep deprivation or mentally fatiguing conditions.

Neuroprotection and Mental Health 🧩

In mental health, creatine has shown potential as an adjunct treatment for depression.
