What Size Urn Do I Need?
Choosing the right size urn can feel confusing, especially when you're grieving. But don’t worry – we’ve made it simple. Whether you're keeping ashes at home, scattering them, or planning a water ceremony, you'll need an urn with the right capacity.
The general rule is:

1lb (0.45kg) of body weight = 1 cubic inch of ashes.

This means a person weighing 10 stone (140lb or 63.5kg) will need an urn that holds at least 140 cubic inches (around 2.3 litres).
However, it's worth noting that some people produce slightly more or fewer ashes depending on factors like bone density, cremation temperature, and method. If you're unsure, it’s always safer to go up a size or choose an urn with a little extra space.

What Type of Urn Should I Choose?
The type of urn you need depends on what you plan to do with the ashes. If you’re scattering on land or water, choose a biodegradable urn designed for that purpose – these are eco-friendly and made to return gently to nature.

Scattering on the River Lee, Ware, Hertfordshire
The River Lee in Ware, Hertfordshire, offers a peaceful and reflective setting for scattering ashes. Flowing through beautiful countryside and historic waterways, this tranquil river provides a serene and dignified environment to honour a loved one’s memory.
For Hindu and Sikh communities, scattering ashes in flowing water is a sacred ritual, symbolising the release of the soul and its journey toward liberation (moksha). The gentle current of the River Lee makes it a fitting and respectful location for this meaningful ceremony.
Whether holding the service from the riverbank or aboard a boat, the calm waters and scenic surroundings ensure a heartfelt and dignified farewell. The River Lee’s accessibility and natural beauty make it an ideal location for families to gather and say their final goodbyes in a peaceful and meaningful way.

There is a little bit of a wait on these at the moment but I thought I'd share some customer photos of them putting a Companion Petal™ in their beautiful garden.

If you are thinking of putting your loved one's ashes in the garden then I think it's very important to think about whether you want them to remain there should you ever need to relocate. Our garden memorials can move with you. No need to stress about having to leave them behind, just put them in the removal van with the rest of your belongings.

Works equally well for pets and we have a pet size version.

I just ❤️this testimonial that entered my inbox this morning...

"My beautiful glass blackbird flew safely into my hands today and I am delighted with it. My husband and I used to feed the blackbirds here at home and so my little glass blackbird is a lovely reminder of him and will be really special to me. Thank you all so much for your speedy and efficient service"

So many of our gorgeous customers find a way to use their loved one's ashes to create a meaningful way to cherish a memory held dear to their heart. I personally think it can be such a helpful way to navigate the tricky path of loss. To be able to focus on the happy times, the together times...they might still make you cry but in a good way I think...

Just wanted to thank the wonderful Storm Huntley and her team on Channel 5 for inviting me onto the show to talk about whether it's ok to scatter ashes in public. Really good to let the audience know the facts and make informed choices.

Our Story

Richard set up Scattering Ashes in 2010 with the sole aim of helping people to celebrate the lives of their loved one. People may write a will and say that they want to be cremated but what do you do with the ashes? You could gather friends and family together for a simple ashes ceremony in a favourite spot or on a boat. Or you could send them into space, set them alight on a Viking Longboat or have a firework display. We are here to help you choose a suitable way to remember your loved one, whatever you choose to do.

As an award-winning family business based in Devon, we will always go the extra mile to help you memorialise your partner, your family member, or your friend in the best possible way.

Our website has loads of helpful and informative advice about what you can and cannot do with cremation ashes. Our Amazon 5 star rated guide book also has lots of useful tips about ashes and how to have a really good ceremony.

We'll guide you through the journey making sure you have a truly memorable ceremony #4thceremony
