Is you child with the right athletic development coach? 🤔
If you turned up to a martial arts class 🥋the instructor was a White belt or your Childs school teachers were not qualified teachers 📜 would you send them in to learn? No, of course not, and the same should be when investing in your Childs athletic development.
This is taken from a post by my friend Rob Anderson who runs The Athlete Academy, PLEASE PLEASE check them out.
Ask yourself theses questions before sending your child off.
Does my childs coach have the absolute basics?
- DBS.
- Some form of entry level qualification in what they are doing.
- Valid first aid certificate. ⛑️
- Valid insurance.
Then ask the questions?
- Do they have any experience in coaching kids?
- Do they have some form of degree in sports science or strength and conditioning?
- Can they show you an example of a session plan and explain how this will develop your Childs athleticism?
Next level of questions to find a really great coach:
- Do they have any advanced level qualifications like accreditation with a governing body like the UKSCA, NSCA or ASCA or a Masters Degree?
- Can they show you a training curriculum and how your child will develop over time 📈
- Have they got experience working in some form of development academy like at a professional club?
- Can they explain terms like Osgood Schlatters, Serve’s disease or Sinding Larsen Johansson Syndrome for example.
- Do they understand peak height velocity, peak weight velocity or adolescents awkwardness?
- Do they take the latter into account when programming?

🚨Does your child play sport and all they do is play sport?
If so then that’s fine, HOWEVER, there could be problems ahead ⚠️
If youths are only focus on PLAYING sport, ALL the time, this can lead to issues later down the line if there is no attention made to developing strength, power & speed.
Athletic Development Potential: 🏃♂️
While there can be developments of strength, power & speed by just playing sport all the time, if we don’t focus on developing these qualities we are selling the child short in their development. Research has show that when focused session of strength, power & speed are included in a Childs development they reach a higher level of potential in athletic development, which helps for ALL sport.
Injury Risk: 🩼
While some injuries just can not be helped. Strength training has been shown to help reduce the likely hood of developing overuse injuries such as Osgood Schlatters as well as making the body more robust to other injuries. Therefore, if your child is strong, they can train every more to help them develop the sports skills required to make the higher levels of performance.
Discipline: 🧠
At the Physical Edge Academy we believe that having the discipline to do the things that make us great, requires that little extra. We focus on earning the right to lift the bigger Dumbells or Powerbags. We have a holistic approach that requires habits and these are tracked and reported to parents. Talent only gets you so far, hard work and discipline gets you over the line and its the extra attention to life habits like packing your school bag we focus on.
