Good morning Shepperton! Unfortunately we must announce that under our leadership Shepperton Youth Club will not reopen. This is very sad for all of us and we know many of you will also feel sad by this announcement. We do not have enough volunteers and Chelsea our Lead Youth Worker moves to Sheffield in August. Chelsea and the management committee have taken the decision it would not be fair on anyone to open and then close again. Lots of conversations have taken place and we have had lots of support from our Cllr Maureen Attewell who is on our management committee.
This page will remain open for 4 weeks from today for anyone to capture memories such as photos. The message function will be open for 14 days for anyone who wishes to understand more.
We think you are all absolutely incredible young residents and wish you nothing but safety, happiness and the opportunities to make your dreams real! Thank you to everyone in our community who has believed in our young people and contributed to our success. Now it is time to handover for this youth club to achieve a new chapter. If anyone wants to discuss youth club potential pls reach out to Maureen.
Thank you also to our management committee members Paul, Richard, Richard, Maureen.
From your Youth Workers with the biggest love and wishes

Today on a casual walk we came across some of our incredible young people at the skate park, we spoke with them and explained the rules of lockdown. They immediately suggested themselves that they return home. Our young people are not flouting rules or trying to breach lockdown conditions, like all of us they are unclear and confused by what the expectations are.
❗️We are proud to say we will be deploying our youth workers on the streets for detached youth work to support young people who need us and to help you all understand what’s happening. We will keep this page updated. 💜

31/12/2020

To all our amazing young people, families and our Shepperton community. The last time we saw you all was March this year, it’s fair to say it’s been a crazy and strange year. We have been pleased to hear regular updates of families finding time for each other, community members standing together and we are so proud of the resilience of our young people. As we enter 2021 things won’t immediately return to normal, we still have a way to go but we wish you all the safest and happiest times together with those who matter most to you all. We will open again and we will make a point of extra water fights, BBQs, karaoke, PlayStation (Chelsea has been practicing) we will be together as friends and neighbours! Until then we are still here for anyone who needs any extra support from us, just drop us a private message.

From all of us to all of you, the happiest of New Years, celebrate safely together!

Today we where informed of a post by Spelthorne Beat (Surrey Police) . This post unfortunately uses a picture of our youth centre and youth village sign to report anti social behaviour by young people and further gives license for young people and parents to be criticised in some comments we have read. Our management committee which includes our borough and county councillors are aware of this and the matter is being addressed.
We want to assure the many parents who are concerned about the impact of this post of two things:
1. We are here and we are safe, our young people are safe from harm and free from stereotype or discrimination when they attend Shepperton Youth Village.
2. All young people have been and will continue to be welcome at our youth club when we return from the COVID pandemic.
Surrey Police did not try to contact us about this incident but rather decided that this would be the best approach and reported this to the community using a picture of our youth club. We do not know why this decision was taken as it sadly undermines 9 years of hard work both from our youth centre volunteers and former police colleagues but we will always welcome a professional discussion to work in partnership on this issue.
Understandably as parents you are concerned and angry. It is upsetting that you have had to see this portrayal of a place that is so important to (our) your young people.
Our youth centre continues to stand proud as part of Shepperton Community, with many adult residents attending Centre 69 as it was back in the day.
We have proven that by being open we can reduce youth related anti social behaviour by 49%, something which was documented by BBC.
Unfortunately this statement also risks breaking down the trust we have spent years asking young people to have in the police. See below one of our old PCs playing one touch in the hall.
To our young people we continue the message that the police are a force to protect you and keep you safe from harm. Your local police officers/station is always a place to turn if you are ever feeling unsafe or in direct danger.
We will never make excuses for anti social behaviour, we will always challenge this when working with young people. It’s never acceptable.
This being said all services have a job to do, it does not serve our community to compromise the trust that has been established by all.

We will continue to be a voice for our young people in Shepperton, we will continue to celebrate you all and the amazing people you are; and will continue stand with our community. 💜

Until we reopen please stay safe!

Hey everyone! How are we all doing? We hope everyone is well and we are very excited to see you all again. It’s seems our young people have been bossing lockdown!

Sadly it’s looking like we will not return anytime soon. We are In communication with Surrey County Council and discussing what return will look like, however please know this will not be before September. It’s unfortunate but as Surrey has many tenants in its buildings we need to make sure we are all kept as safe as possible!

Please make sure you are continuing to wash hands, keep a distance and wear face coverings when necessary.

Share with us how you want youth club to look until then and we can start to think about options.

Perhaps virtual youth club, or some safe distanced activities in the parks or some safe distanced small group chats and activities.

A powerful advocate for children and young people. Dave came to Shepperton youth club last year and was very impressed with our approach, it was fantastic to have the support of such a strong leader in Children’s Services sector, who understood the importance of community driven change. This is awful news for his family and close colleagues and we extend our condolences to all! 💜
