In Ancient Rome, 15th March was the celebration of Anna Perenna, a deity of the circle or ‘ring’ of the year. 💍

Offerings were made to the Spirit of the Year, so that the circle could be completed. ⭕

15th March was also the Ides of March in Roman tradition and a Festival to Jupiter. 🔮

Shakespeare had a soothsayer warn Julius Caesar 'Beware the Ides of March'. ⚠

Indeed, he was reputedly assassinated on 15th March 44 BC. 😢

To round out the last day of feasting as Christians move into the period of lent, we have 'Fritter Thursday'. 🥘

It may seem odd that this day occurs AFTER Ash Wednesday - that may be due to the fact that the period of lent was previously a little shorter, and 40 days became fixed around the 7th Century. Maybe today was seen as the last chance to eat something tasty!🍜 🍽

Yesterday, which was also Full Moon (and a Supermoon i.e. up to 20% bigger), we were at Carnac, Brittany, France. There are over 6000 stones dating back to 6500BC! Between April & October most of the stones are inaccessible without a paid tour, which we took, but even then you can really only walk around a few and not really stop and spend time with them. I still enjoyed it though. We found a little stone circle nestled between the path along the edge of the fenced off area and the road (not very busy fortunately) and I was able to site amongst that cluster ...

Monday 24th June is Midsummers Day and was considered magical in Cornwall and Ireland, when there was feasting, fires, songs, and dances.
