Home Instead Watford Delivering Care and Companionship to older people wishing to remain in their own homes Welcome to Home Instead Watford.

Home Instead’s purpose is to "change the face of ageing" by becoming the most respected home care company in the UK. In practical terms for me this means building a local team of people with passion, enthusiasm and commitment; who want to help the elderly in our community remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. The key criteria we look for when recruiting new team members is

empathy. This is not something that can be trained and indeed many of our team have direct experience in looking after a family member themselves. We had first-hand experience of trying to find the right care for Peter’s Aunt Marge who lived with Alzheimer’s disease. We just could not find the right care to suit her needs, and felt that there was no option for her but to move into a residential care home where she rapidly went downhill and sadly passed away two months later. We are sure that Marge would have lived longer and been far happier in her own home, we want to provide this choice for other people. The ethos of Home Instead really stood out to me as they focus on service first and business second. We want to provide a service that we would be happy to use for ourselves and our family. Sometimes it’s the simple things that matter, like having the same person coming at times that suit you, to do the things that you want. It’s not difficult, but it makes all the difference. Our office is open just off Tolpits Lane and you are welcome to pop in any time for a chat and a cup of tea. We are very involved in local community events and fundraising initiatives to help the elderly in our community. Peter and Alexis Neighbour

🔔How do I keep my loved one safe from falls when I think they're experiencing hearing loss?

It's important to consider how your loved one moves about their home and how their hearing affects their ability to do this well. Ask yourself questions like:

👂Is it time for a hearing test?
👂How can you encourage them to consider hearing aids?
👂What can you do to make hearing aids more comfortable to wear? (A common reason for not wearing them)
👂How can you encourage family and friends to make themselves heard? (In conversation or movement)
👂Can you make hearing the door, phone or oven timer easier?
👂What can you provide to help support balance?

👂Seniors with hearing loss are over 2 times more likely to fall than their peers, with the risk increasing by 1.4 times per ten decibels of lost hearing. Why? Our ears are delicate, and if the inner ear's balance mechanisms are thrown off, it can significantly impair our ability to stay on-balance.

This means that we are also more likely to miss environmental sounds that signal danger, like approaching vehicles, closing doors, or uneven pavement slabs. 👂👣🚘🚪

Because of this, we see higher-impact falls and injuries from tripping, slipping, and being knocked. But, it doesn't have to be the case.

Want to learn more about helping keep your loved ones safe from bad falls, even when they're losing their hearing? We've got a blog post that you'll be interested to read right here 👉 https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0b3lzj0

Falls and Fractures

30% of people aged 65+ will suffer at least one fall a year. As we age, our risk increases, as does the chance of secondary falls and hospital admissions.

Many falls will result in soft tissue damage, but for some, there is a risk of fractures. These risks increase with age.

The causes of falls range from decreased mobility to decreased cognitive and executive function. These factors control how we judge and adapt to fall-risk situations.

We're pretty passionate about preventing falls here at , and we have a wealth of information to share with you about keeping mum or dad up on their feet.

A few things you can do to help include:
💛Remove clutter from pathways
💛 Arrange furniture to make rooms easy to navigate.
💛Remove or secure throw rugs.
💛 Use assistive devices to retrieve items from high shelves.
💛Get your loved one a cane to use when walking on uneven surfaces.
💛Encourage shoes with non-slip soles.
💛Have your loved one avoid walking in stocking feet on wood floors.
💛 Allow enough space to walk around furniture.
💛 Allow plenty of time for activities and tasks
💛Make sure the home and stairways are well lit.
💛Use a night light and/or leave a light on in the bathroom to reduce the risk of falls in the dark.

Among the ages of 59 and 73, a high number of hospital admissions are caused by cardiovascular (men 71%, women 68%) and respiratory (men 40%, women 34%) issues.

The most significant factors for this are poor health, smoking, fractures and higher BMIs. 👈Do you recognise any of these in your elderly loved one?

It may be time to talk to mum or dad about quitting smoking, or making sure they've got healthy meals and snacks to eat that'll keep them in tip-top condition. It may also be time to take action to make sure your loved one doesn't take a tumble in their home. But you don't have to do this alone.

Want the link to our blog post to give you the best tools and tricks to making sure this happen? Comment 'hospital' down below and we'll send you our best resources 👇.

When we look at avoiding hospitalisation in our elderly loved ones, 🧠Dementia and Cognitive Impairment🧠 come up as being two of the more common reasons.

In fact, 1 in 4 hospital beds is occupied by dementia patients in the UK.

The reasons for hospital admissions among people with dementia include
🔹acute illness
🔹poorer function
🔹malnutrition and hydration
🔹or delirium

For some, this is caused by a lack of diagnosis or recognition of on-set dementia, inadequate support, social isolation, illness or infection, or plainly forgetting how or when to eat, drink or medicate.

We know you want to keep your mum or dad out of hospital for as long as possible, even if they are living with dementia or another type of cognitive impairment.

A few things you can do:
🔹Visit the GP with your loved one and ask about what you can implement at home to assist Mum and Dad
🔹Seek social community hubs, like daycare centres, for fun activities and time away from the home environment
🔹Find out about Home Care services, like Home Instead
🔹Having fresh drink water easily accessible
🔹Healthier meal options, particularly at times of the day when Mum and Dad don’t want to cook for themselves
🔹A time when you can go for a walk together and enjoy simple exercise

Do you have any tried and tested tips for keeping your loved ones safe, well and out of hospital? We'd love to hear them.

Throwback to our very first podcast episode of Let's Talk Home Care where we chat to Nadia Arden-Scott of Shuscape about the importance of a good pair of shoes.

It may seem logical that a good pair of shoes can prevent a fall, but what makes a 'good pair of shoes'? What do we need to be aware of when we're purchasing new shoes for our parents?

We'd love you to have a listen to the our pilot episode. It's a short one, but packed with juicy tidbits that'll have you running to Shuscape: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H09Zpwn0

👴👵Why is fall prevention so important for the elderly? 👴👵

One of the things about getting older is that we are much more likely to fall; in fact, as we hit our 70s, our chance of falling increases by 50%. At that point in our lives, the probability of injuring ourselves is bigger, raising the likelihood of fractures and prolonged hospital stays. And that can impact our outlook on life, independence, and our future happiness.

This month we'll be giving you tips and insights to keeping your parents and elderly loved ones safe from unnecessary falls. Keep your eyes peeled.

Got any questions about how to prevent falls for your elderly loved one? Drop them below 👇

Did you know that over 74% of falls in older adults occur inside the home? At least half are preventable with a risk assessment and fall prevention plan.

👓 Fall Prevention Strategies: How Home Care Reduces Falls From Poor Vision 👓

As we age, our visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, which is the ability to distinguish shapes, details of objects, and contrasts at a given distance, reduce. This means we start to misjudge our footing or reach for things. Those with degenerative eye diseases, like cataracts and glaucoma, have further complications in the form of blind spots and tunnel vision.

Unfortunately, this can lead to falls that can hospitalise our loved ones, which can wreak havoc with their independence.

Home care and prevention strategies can Significantly reduce visual fall risks for seniors - discover everything you need to know about Home Care in our brand new blog post: https://eu1.hubs.ly/H09S_s-0

Don't forget to keep your loved ones hydrated in this hot weather (and yourself, too!) 🔥🍵 Keep a bottle or glass of water close by to sip on throughout the day and stay away from alcohol.

UTI's can be caused by dehydration, and these can be serious for older people, sometimes even resulting in hospital admissions 👇

"Poor hydration is equally prevalent among older people and... can cause strokes, kidney problems, pressure sores and skin problems, low blood pressure, dizziness, delirium and increased risk of falls."

Stay safe whilst you're enjoying the British Summertime.

Yes, there are many things you can do to help your elderly loved one avoid hospital admissions. Here are our top care pro tips.

🔆YELLOW HEAT HEALTH ALERT🔆

A yellow heat health alert has been issued for most of England this week as temperatures may rise to up to 29/30 degrees in some areas.

This level of alert means the temperatures might affect vulnerable groups, and that includes older people.

Government advice to help stay safe and well includes:
▪️keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
▪️if you are going to do a physical activity (for example exercise or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening
▪️keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
▪️if you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen
▪️drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
▪️check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you

Let's keep ourselves and our loved ones safe in this hot weather.

💛We love to celebrate our clients here at Home Instead, and Brian's story is perfect for showing how keeping our elderly loved ones active and cared for helps them thrive.

Brian has always been active, until a recent stay in hospital, which was tough for him mentally and physically. When Brian returned from hospital he needed a little extra help to get him back on his feet. He decided that his next challenge was to build his strength to walk into his garden and feel the sun on his face.

That's where Kundi, Brian's Live-in Care Professional, and Laura, one of our dedicated Home Care professionals come in. Kundi helps Brian with his daily and nightly needs, encouraging him to be as physically and mentally independent as possible. Laura supports him with personal care and physio exercises which help Brian to recondition his body 💪

❗BOOK A FREE FALLS ASSESSMENT AND KEEP YOUR LOVED ONE MOBILE AND ACTIVE❗

Keeping our loved ones mobile in later life is essential for keeping them fit and strong and reducing the risk of falls.

Ageing impairs things like balance, muscles, and joints. And, if we spend long periods of time sat down, it only makes things worse.

Here are a few activities to try with your loved ones to help keep them mobile at home:
🔹Walking to the shops instead of taking the bus or car
🔹Learning some simple yoga moves
🔹Gardening
🔹Housework
🔹Balance and strengthening classes

If you are worried that mum or dad are at risk of falling due to them becoming frailer and less agile, why not book a Free Falls Assessment with us?

We’ll send a member of our team to assess everything in your loved ones home, and you’ll get a prevention plan emailed to you so you can make any necessary changes. It’ll give you peace of mind, and help them maintain their independence.
