Why Am I Always the One Getting Injured: Sprains
Some friends who play football frequently experience sprains, sometimes in the same area, sometimes in different parts of the body. Even professional football players, with access to expert medical teams, are not immune to such injuries. Why are some people more prone to sprains than others?
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this issue is not only related to the muscles and tendons but also to one’s constitution and internal organs.
1. Cold causes contraction: Cold energy has a
contracting nature. When a person’s body
accumulates a significant amount of cold, or
cold is concentrated in certain areas, it can
cause the muscles and tendons to contract
and tighten. If the person then makes sudden,
larger movements, the already tense muscles
and tendons may tighten further, leading to
tearing and injury.
2. The liver stores blood and governs the
tendons: The liver stores blood, which
nourishes and moistens the tendons,
facilitating proper movement. When liver
blood is abundant, the tendons remain supple
and flexible. Conversely, when liver blood is
deficient, the tendons lose nourishment and
become stiff. In such a state, even simple
movements like bending over or kicking can
easily cause a strain.
3. Qi promotes blood circulation: Qi is
responsible for moving blood throughout the
body. When qi is deficient or doesn’t flow
smoothly, blood circulation slows down
leading to blood stasis. This affects the
delivery of nutrients to the muscles and
tendons, making them stiff and more
susceptible to sprains when subjected to
uneven force.
To prevent frequent sprains, here are some suggestions:
1. Avoid cold exposure: Avoid cold drinks, refrain
from overusing air conditioning, and keep
yourself warm. Drink ginger tea to expel cold
when necessary.
2. Nourish liver blood: Get enough sleep,
maintain a positive mood, massage the
'Sanyinjiao' or 'Taichong' acupoints, and
consume foods like goji berries in moderation.
3. Regulate qi: Take frequent walks or practice
qigong, soak your feet, and consume aged
tangerine peel or rose tea to help regulate qi.
If you are already prone to sprains, in addition to the above suggestions, it is essential to seek treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, or moxibustion. These treatments help expel cold, regulate qi and blood, and clear the meridians, improving your constitution and internal organ function from the root. This comprehensive approach will help you stop being a 'fragile person.'
