We recommend you eat 80 grams of protein a day. Yes that’s a full time job! Protein is what grows your baby, uterus, extra blood, breasts, placenta, etc. Protein is critical for a healthy pregnancy. It stabilizes your blood sugar and keeps your blood pressure down. And it doesn’t have to be meat. We have plenty of vegetarian and vegan clients who are able to get enough protein in their diets. This is a great chart with protein options!

"See that tiny pink bead on my lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's ! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families. April is Cesarean Section Awareness month. As PT’s, we consistently advocate for parents to prepare for birth and it’s unpredictable twists- as well as return to PT once cleared by their MD post birth. Parents who have birthed via c-section: this means you, too! Why is it important and what can we do to help?⁣

〰️ Some persons find they have painful s/e/x postpartum regardless of method of birth (we treat this and it’s root causes)⁣
〰️ It is crucial to pair diaphragmatic breath with pelvic floor contraction and TA engagement for core control⁣
〰️ In phases of scar healing, we can teach you scar release/make adaptive changes to scar tissue easiest during initial stages of healing⁣
〰️ Say no to the shelf or apron! (IYKYK) ⭆⭆⭆ yes, we can help and it’s not about weight loss⁣
〰️ Education on hormones, body changes, progression⁣
〰️ Scars can be adapted many, many years post so you’re not too late⁣
〰️ Scar tissue & restrictions can prevent Diastasis Recti from fully healing⁣

Our DPTs are so highly skilled, we can use various techniques at the muscles of the abdomen, the myofascial bundles along the c section scar (whether this is a new scar or a very old scar!), such as the dry needling you see Dr. Jana performing here. Call us to be seen at one of our 4 locations! (410) 601- 3991.

There comes a time in labor where many women, when undisturbed, reach a point where they feel like they are about to die. When all the tools and breath and movement that has supported them this far are no longer enough. She begins to feel more and more alone, isolated in her experience- even when being held by a loved one. Her body feels like it is breaking in half, and there is no way back. She moans and cries and screams. She proclaims she can’t anymore. “I’m dying.”,she says. She tries to find comfort but it eludes her. This breaking of the vessels is the secret of creation and in labor a woman is the embodiment of creation. As a midwife, this is a vision I revere. My entire being pulses with love and admiration as I behold a woman who has fully surrendered and allowed the wisdom of birth to fully engage with her body. I see greatness. I see primal power. I hear holy sacred screams that rise from the core of the earth to open the heavens and make space for the new soul to come down.

Have you ever wondered how a Frank Breech baby fits inside the womb? Here is a picture taken just moments after a cesarean delivery. How amazing!

"Immediately after taking Emma from my belly, my husband had our 'fancy' camera ready to go. He got the crazy shot that I now have framed in my living room. Never have I seen a baby that was literally folded in half... I [felt] so bad that my sweet girl was stuck in what I would think of as such an uncomfortable position while growing and developing in my belly. But she is a very happy and healthy girl now!"

FUN FACT!! Did you know...

That human milk changes its composition through the day. So what your baby gets from you in the AM is very different to the PM milk! 😱

The Milk you produce in the morning has 3 times the level of cortisol, a hormone that promotes alertness, than milk made at night. Night milk is higher in melatonin, which encourages sleep. ((WHY did I NOT know this when I was breastfeeding!!!! 🧐))

So here's our little tip to you: LABEL the milk you express so you know when is best to feed it to your bub!

Your Mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself.

She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not feeling well, she’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow. Your mother lives inside your laughter.

She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space, not even death.

Intermittent fetal auscultation. The practice of listening to baby’s heart tones (by hand, most often using a Doppler) at regular and increasing intervals during labor. While standard practice at home, this method of monitoring baby during labor may be an option for low risk labor and delivery in a hospital setting and has lots of benefits. No wires connected continuously to the birthing person means ease and greater range of movement. Laboring people may find it easier to access comfort measures such as water and massage. IA can ease anxieties in families finding themselves unnecessarily wrapped up in monitors and sounds. IA also requires more frequent check ins with staff as they check baby by hand rather than assess baby at a nurses station. If you have had a healthy pregnancy and are low risk, you may be a good candidate for the freedom of IA. Talk to your doula or provider if you want more information! If this is something you want for your labor, talk to your provider beforehand. Not all providers are supportive or well versed in this method of fetal monitoring. (IA performed in picture by )

Significant health resource savings could occur by shifting low-risk births from hospitals to home birth and birth center services. Greater examination of Australian women's preferences for home birth and birth center birth models of care is needed.

What are some signs your csection scar needs mobilization??

If you are experiencing low back pain (we did a reel explaining this last week!!), it could be from adhesions in your incision site pulling towards the front. This May put more strain on the low back = discomfort or pain.

Pain with deep thrusting or bladder frequency could be from your incision adhering to internal pelvic organs!

Shelf like appearance of your scar could be a external sign that your scar is adhered to surrounding structures. Remember, a csection cuts through 7 layers!!

And then having issues with core activation or feeling connected w your core can be another sign!

Join us Tuesday night, March 2nd at 730pm EST for a csection scar mobilization webinar with ! The webinar will break down the why and how of scar mobilization. Recording will be available!
