Over the weekend, Norton Gold Fields Paddington hosted the Underground Mine Emergency Response Competition (UMERC) 2025.

Teams competed in multiple emergency response scenarios including Vertical Rescue, Search and Rescue, Team Skills, First Aid, Fire Fighting, Incident Management, and Breathing Apparatus Skills.

FRSA and Skylotec proudly sponsored the “Knot Off” challenge during the Sponsor Expo on Friday afternoon. Congratulations to Skyla Newman from KCGM, who took out the win with an impressive time of just 39 seconds!

FRSA also sponsored the “Best New Team” award, which was won by AngloGold Ashanti Tropicana - who went on to win the overall competition as well. A fantastic achievement!

A huge thank you to Norton Gold Fields Paddington for hosting this year’s event, and to all the organisers, adjudicators, and volunteers who made it possible. Congratulations to all the teams who competed - your commitment, skill, and teamwork were outstanding.

A massive few days across the country with Mining Emergency Response Competitions held in South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland.

SAMERC: Held at the CFS State Training Centre in Brukunga last week, South Australian Mines Emergency Response Competition hosted mines rescue scenarios including first aid, fire fighting, vertical rescue, road crash rescue, and confined space just to name a few. FRSA were once again proud Road Crash Rescue Trophy sponsors, and would like to congratulate BHP Carrapateena for taking out the Road Crash Rescue scenario, as well as the event overall.

Skills were tested across a wide range of disciplines, and FRSA would like to congratulate Cornwall Coal for taking out our sponsored event and for placing second overall, as well as Bluestone for their overall win.

Australian Mines Rescue Competition: The 61st Australia Mines Rescue Competition, organised by Queensland Mines Rescue Service, was held late last week at BMA Broadmeadows Mine. There were teams from both QLD and NSW competing across multiple scenarios. A huge congratulations to Moranbah North for taking out first place (proudly sponsored by FRSA).

We’re proud to provide our valued client with the Holmatro T1, which can cut, wedge, ram, spread, hammer, and lift – making it the ultimate rescue multitool. We love hearing such positive feedback on the equipment we supply!

Tools of the Trade

Next up is a new tool new to our arsenal of Rescue Tools.

The Holmatro T1 Forcible Entry tool is a single operator tool designed for opening domestic or industrial external dwelling doors, cutting chains or locks, ramming internal doors or lifting heavy objects to make room for other lifting devises.

The T1 has a spreading force of near 3.5t and a cutting force of over 14t yet only weights 7.5kg and used by a single person.

Our Squad is extremely grateful to Elders and their Community Grants program for their commitment to this project.

We see this Rescue tool being a tremendous asset to our squad and our community.
