Did you know that your brain is protected by hard bones which make up your skull? There is an opening in the bottom of your skull where your spinal cord attaches to your brain. The spinal cord is protected by bones called vertebrae. The different bones (vertebrae) of the spine are:
7 Cervicals (neck)
12 Thoracics or Dorsals (mid-back)
5 Lumbars (low back)
1 Sacrum (five fused vertebrae)
1 Coccyx (three or four fused vertebrae)
Vertebrae out of position often damage, stress, and pinch spinal nerves. We refer to this condition as subluxation. Subluxation leads to impaired normal function and loss of health.
Early detection of subluxation is vital. Your brain is continuously producing messages or electrical impulses which travel through your spinal cord, out your spinal nerves to all organs, tissues, and cells of your body. Subluxation interrupts or blocks this nerve energy flow causing imbalance, and interferes with your body’s healing ability.

HOW CAN A CHIROPRACTOR
HELP WITH HEADACHES?
The treatment you receive from your chiropractor should depend on your individual circumstances, which they will assess during your appointment. After assessing your symptoms, they may find that manual therapy, soft tissue therapy, or modalities such as acupuncture may be most beneficial to you.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF HEADACHES?
Headaches can vary considerably between people. One person may experience mild pain but can manage their daily duties effectively, while another may experience intense throbbing that requires them to lie down in a dark room.
Additionally, headaches can vary within the same person. One headache may be mild, and the next they experience is severe and piercing.
Generally, the most common forms of headaches are:

Tension headaches- These headaches typically feel like a dull ache at the top of the head, almost as if it is a headband worn too tightly. It usually affects the temples, back of the head, and forehead, and can also be felt in the shoulder muscles. This type of headache is often caused by stress.
Cluster headaches- Cluster headaches are typically experienced on one side of the head and may come and go for around 24 hours, with each headache lasting between 15 minutes and three hours. These can often feel like a burning and piercing type of pain and are most common during autumn and spring.
Migraines- Migraines can last between two hours and several days and are often felt on one side of the head (though pain
on both sides is possible). They can trigger sensitivity to light and sound and are typically a throbbing pain. Migraines can include additional symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
Cervicogenic headaches- This type of headache often originates in the neck and can result in pain in one or more areas of the head or face. Cervicogenic headaches are often dull and aching, though pain and intensity can worsen.

Chiropractic works by using hands-on spinal manipulation and other adjustments to correct musculoskeletal problems, which aims to restore proper alignment, reduce pain, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Chiropractors often employ a holistic approach, incorporating other treatments like soft tissue therapy, exercise advice, and lifestyle counseling to address overall health and prevent future issues.

How Chiropractic Adjustments Work
• Spinal Manipulation: The core of chiropractic is the adjustment, a controlled, sudden force applied to a joint to restore proper movement and alignment.
• Nerve Stimulation: These adjustments stimulate nerve receptors in and around the joints, which can influence the nervous system to reduce muscle spasms and change pain pathways. *
• Improved Movement and Mobility: By freeing up restricted joints, the body’s overall movement and function improve, leading to better coordination. “
• Pain Reduction: The release of gas bubbles from joint capsules, a process called cavitation, can create a popping sound and an immediate sense of relief. This process also helps to reduce inflammation and stimulate circulation.

Therapies
• Soft Tissue Therapy: Techniques like massage, stretching, and direct pressure are used to relax muscles and relieve tension. a
• Rehabilitation and Exercises: Chiropractors may recommend specific exercises to improve strength, mobility, and function.
• Lifestyle Advice: Guidance on ergonomics, stress management, exercise, and nutrition helps support overall health and prevention.

Physiotherapy treatment involves an initial assessment, followed by a personalized treatment plan that often includes exercise therapy (strengthening, conditioning, balance), manual therapy (massage, joint mobilization), patient education, and lifestyle advice to reduce pain, improve movement, and restore function. Adjunctive therapies like heat/cold packs, electrical stimulation, and hydrotherapy may also be used.

Overall Goal
The primary goal of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, improve movement and function, increase overall physical well-being, and empower individuals to self-manage their condition to prevent future problems.
